Posting on this board for awhile now I've made a general observation.  GRRM has crafted hundreds of wonderful characters in ASOIAF and almost all of them have fans.  I think it's only natural for us as humans when we read a story to attach ourselves to certain characters and "root" for them.  Every house Stark/targaryen/tyrell/lannister etc....has it's supporters and it's detractors and even characters who have done vile things have their fans because GRRM has made his characters so multi-dimensional(the hound, theon, Roose, etc....)  In my opinion this is one of the great things about the ASOIAF fandom, the diverse range of opinions and breadth of knowledge concerning the characters.  Yet there's one character, relatively new to ASOIAF who seems to inspire no love, and that is the supposed Aegon VI.

It seems to me having gone through five novels now we've watched those of every house struggle/achieve/fall/die.  Robb/starks, Theon/Greyjoys, Danaerys/Targaryens, Oberyn/Martell, all of the Lannister children, and so on and so forth.  Having watched all these various characters grow for some 2700 pages I think the arrival of Aegon really cheapened this struggle.  Here comes this almost Deus ex machina like figure, with a sellsword army out of thin air coming back to Westeros to stick his nose into wars/conflicts that to us the reader, he has nothing to do with.  Call it a literary prejudice or something but I personally can't get behind Aegon simply because he feels like an interloper.  Some random guy who just waltzed into this story we all love.  Also Jon Connington has got to be one of the more annoying characters in the game right now.  I was wondering if anyone out there agrees with me or if there are actually Aegon fans that exist.

I think the affect you describe might what GrrM wants. Aegon will be very successful and this will feel unfair, and then he will be unmasked as a fraud.

I quite like Jon Con though and I've seen quite a few people who do.

While I actually like Jon Connington as a man ironically keeps getting fucked over by doing good deeds like sparing the townsfolk or saving Tyrion, I have to agree that Aegon is too left field and too lucky, and more importantly without any real personality for me to like him.

I'd rather Aegon win than Dany.

Your thoughts completely reflect mine. I can't get behind the guy or care about him. I don't like all the plot lines in the story but this one is the first that really disappointed me. I can't root for him and I can't care for him. I'm hoping he doesn't last much longer at this rate but I have a feeling that won't be the case. The little we have seen has been rather disappointing. I'd much rather have Stannis on the throne than him.

Aegon is on the radar and whether I like him or not is yet to be seen.  He did display some major cajones in taking griffins roost and raising the banner so close to KL.

He is interesting to read about to say the least and I want to see how successful he is at raising dorne and defending against king Tommen's men who will certainly be coming for him immediately.

I just treat him like he's part of the 'extended ASOIAF universe'. I don't believe Westeros(minus Dorne) meshes with Essos very well at all. I always get the feeling that they are 2 seperate worlds/novels colliding, but I love them each none-the-less.

Aegon himself is just suffering from the lack of a PoV. I wouldn't mind seeing him succeed. I want to see what this Golden Company can do.

Martin has already confirmed that there will be a second "dance of the dragons", so it's kind of hard to root for a walking dead guy...

I don't mind the plot line but I don't want him to succeed. And I don't think it is only because he come late, but he was too pampered and had it too easy.

I for one am rooting for him.The story is interesting and there are many great characters some of which I like but I was never attached emotionally to any of them (Viserys was my favorite but we saw too little of him and he met a rather untimely end).I tried to root for Daenerys but never really liked her so I stuck with the story only out of curiosity to see how it will go.To me Young Aegon's intoduction is the best thing that has happend so far, I  instantly liked him and oddly enough he is the first character I really feel attached to.Naturaly I like Connington as well.

But how he is going to get a dragon? Surely he is not going to return to Essos, right?

I'm much more interested in Jon Connington than Aegon, to be honest. I'm also actively rooting against Varys, so it would be hard for me to feel invested in his personal puppet.

Pretty sure taking Griffin's Roost was Jon's idea, and raising a Targaryen banner while half your force is still unaccounted for and having no allies in the area was rather stupid instead of just pretending to be dealing with a private matter with the Lannisters-Tyrells having bigger fish to fry.

Hah man Viserys was your favorite character?  The Targaryen kool-aid is strong in this one....

Ohhhh yeah I forgot that was already confirmed, what if....Dany lost the dance of the dragons to Aegon?  That would pretty much shatter your world right?

I'd stop reading the books if Dany was killed in the dance of the dragons. I put up with Meereen for her; I expect her to achieve something in Westeros before she dies! :P

Does Aegon need a dragon to take part in a war of succession?

No, but it would be a very short war otherwise and it would look more like another Blackfyre rebellion more than a dance of dragons 2.0.

I think everyone has to accept the central conceit that the story has six primary characters that are essentially immortal until the final book of the series and that will continue to do stuff right up until the end. If you need to root for someone, choose one of them and move on.

Agree with the OP. I don't necessarily dislike Aegon, but after having spent countless time and tears with the other characters I just can't find it in me to really care what happens to him. I think he'll probably sit the Iron Throne at some point but I don't think he'll keep it.

hah very good.  I'm not the biggest Dany fan but your loyalty to her is commendable sir.  She's got some level 99 plot armour though if her and Aegon do indeed come to blows I suspect she'll win.  Her war cry can be "girl's just wanna have fun"
