Yeah.... I'm sure the cowardly Sam just made up the story about how his father threatened to have him killed if he didn't join the Nights Watch.

Randyll Tarly is surely one of the most competent men out there. I don't want him dead, but I want Sam to do something awesome and shove it in his face.

Oh, I don't hope he suffers a painful death. I hope Gilly tells tales of her adventures beyond the Wall with Sam and what a hero he was, and that the stories will spread. I hope Dickon idolizes Sam. I hope Randyll lives long enough for Sam to become a local legend in Horn Hill, and there's not a damn thing he can do to stop it.

Because i) he's a horribly abusive father because his son fails to meet expectations, ii)  he treats Brienne like dirt because she fails to meet expectations, iii) he very casually orders a series of mutilations while dispensing "justice", iv) he dismisses Hyle Hunt for being decent.

These were standard practices. They didn't have this sissy idea of mere time served as any kind of justice we coddle criminals with today. Would you rather lose fingers from Tarly or your head from Ned?

To be sure, Randyll isn't evil. However, he regulary imposes his high expectations on people around him , and expects people to obey. Sure, many lords in Westeros do get sons that aren't up to their expectations- one prime example would be Tywin and Tyrion. However, many lords still accept their sons' obvious flaws and don't seem to make much of a fuss about it. But when Lord Tarly actually threatens to kill his son, simply because he isn't a great of a warrior/soldier as his father expects him to be...that's going a bit too far.

Furthermore, the way he treats Brienne is despicable. The guy just can't accept that a woman is gallivanting around in armor-it just doesn't fit into his world view. Many other characters are suprised by Brienne's status as a skilled swordsman and quickly see her worth, however Randyll Tarly is having none of it. In other words, he's a bigoted prick.

1: Threatened to kill his son because he didn't live up to his ideals of what a son should be
2: Treated Brienne terribly for absolutely no reason than pure sexism
3: Did not make a good impression when described offscreen and made just as bad of one onscreen

He may be something of a badass, but he's also bad and an ass

We don't see or hear anything about Ned mutilating people for theft, or mutiliating a prostitute's genitals for passing along STD's.

The hunt was terrible, but remember what happened when Sam suggested he might want to be a Maester?  He tied him to a wall with a chain around his neck, so that when he lost consciousness he's start to choke.

I do appreciate fact that Tarly is clearly very competent.

I'm actually rather fond of Randyll Tarly, even as I hope he eventually finds it in himself to grow above his lack of love for Samwell.

He is the strict-yet-fair person that so many people want to believe (against the available evidence) Stannis to be.

I don't hate him. I know he's kind of an ass, and I'd never approve of the way he treated Sam, but I respect him. He's one of the most competent commanders and soldiers in Westeros. He doesn't take shit from anyone, and knows how to get thing done.

The only thing that makes me dislike him a bit is the way he treated Sam. I hope he lives long enough to witness Sam doing something awesome and realize that his son is good for something after all, and not an utter failure like he thought.

Randyll Tarly is a terrible father, a horrible sexist and a cruel judge.  I do not like him.  However - I am impressed with the rebuilding of Maidenpool under his rule, compared with the devestation in so many other places.  Most of the inhabitants probably have reason to thank him - and to hope that they never directly attract his notice in any way.

Less than two pages of dialogue:

Quote

He was followed by a haggard grey-faced whore, accused of giving the pox to four of Tarly’s soldiers. “Wash out her private parts with lye and throw her in a dungeon,” Tarly commanded.
...

“How will you find him if you do not know his name? Did you slay Lord Renly?”
“No.”
Tarly weighed the word. He is judging me, as he judged those others. “No,” he said at last, “you only let him die.”
He had died in her arms, his life’s blood drenching her. Brienne flinched. “It was sorcery. I never . . .”
“You never? ” His voice became a whip. “Aye. You never should have donned mail, nor buckled on a sword. You never should have left your father’s hall. This is a war, not a harvest ball. By all the gods, I ought to ship you back to Tarth.”
...

“Go where you want and do as you will . . . but when you’re raped don’t look to me for justice. You will have earned it with your folly.”

Ich.

People that don't understand that these were common practices in the time period Martin is basing ASOIAF on should really search medieval crime and punishment. Interesting stuff that makes Tarly look like a pansy.

Regardless, let's pretend Ned didn't use mutilation as a punishment, as the question was asked. Would you rather lose fingers from Tarly or your head from Ned?

Ned killed a deserter. Tarly would have done the same.

And I know I'd rather be Ned's child than Tarly's.
