Because she hates Jon Snow and a lot of readers really like Jon Snow, including me. It should have been you, remember that phrase? And because she makes some choices which are difficult to understand for some people, like freeing the Kingslayer etc. Plus, she urged Ned to go to King's Landing and we all know how that worked out. Furthermore, she dealt with Tyrion, another much-loved character from the series.

Some of her choices are because she is a mother who would give everything if that meant her children were happy, safe etc. Freeing Jaime for example. Although that was a very bad decision for Robbs cause, it certainly was a good decision for her daughters. Not that it turned out very well however.. And.. I like unCat. Hanging Freys and so on. (:

Because people reading the novel have an omnipotent perspective, unlike Cat, and a small ego, unlike Cat.
They are then forced to bolster themselves by pointing out faults, ignoring perspective. "Why are you so stupid Cat, obviously capturing Tyrion will get Jory killed. GOD you idiot."

That or they love John Snow and can't understand how a woman could see a bastard as an insult to her marriage and an affront to her personal relationships with her subjects.

Just to be sure:

I really like Catelyn. She's a mother who does everything for the sake of her children. Although I like Jon Snow, it's understandable she doesn't like him. Jon Snow is the only one who has ever stood between her and Eddard Stark.

Because her decisions have indirectly led to the death or exile of everyone in her family? Seems a pretty good reason.

There is also a common tendency to blame every misfortune that happens to the Starks on her, in defiance of the facts ...

And your actions directly led to the Exile and Death of the Stark family. Why couldn't you just stop turning the pages? Leave them a happy family in Winterfell, but your greed brought them forward, to King's Landing, destruction and beyond.

This.

And because she made one comment to Jon and for that many think she should burn in all seven hells for it.

Catelyn was my favorite character, before she turned into Lady Stoneheart. I was shocked when she died, maybe even more than Robb's death. Nevertheless I understand the hatred, but luckily I can understand her actions.

One comment? Try an entire lifetime of unjustified alienation and hatred.

Not directed at you:
Disorienting-reading posts defending Ranyll Tarly as a father, then switching tabs and reading about Cat mistreating Jon.

And now we have the birth of yet another Cat hate thread. Joy.

Cat was cold and distant towards him. Martin himself said so. She was never abusive or cruel towards him, it was a single comment made in the middle of grief, an exception and not the rule.

Let the hatefest begin. sigh...

Crazy Nedbert shippers.*

She's a nuanced character, like everyone else, with good sides and bad sides. She just has a habit of picking fan-favourites as adversaries.

*Kidding. I love both Cat and Nedbert. :)

Hating Cat, yes. She was mean to Jon and she was weak, doesn't matter if she had a kind heart or loved her children, she was weak. Hating UnCat, never! She's killing the Freys. We all want the Freys dead. Don't care if Brienne and Jaime die (though they won't anyway), as long as Boltons and Freys die.

Awww, how can you not love both Cat and Nedbert. A great lady and the real, tragic romance of the series. Both make me want to cry. Yep, I agree on the fan favorites.

Weak as in fighting of an assassin with her bare hands? Or, killing one of the mountain clansmen in the Vale? Very weak indeed.

So my comment was the start, and not...I don't know...the thread entitled "Why so much hate for CAT"? If you already knew the tragic inevitability of the thread there wasn't much need for you to show up in it.

It's not that people don't understand that it's an insult to her. It's the fact that she takes it out on Jon instead of Ned as if Jon had a choice in the matter. It's not like she ignores him either. She is cold towards him. I think a lot of readers feel this is unjust.

I don't see why she needs to be anything other than "cold" towards him. He is not her responsibility.
