Question about Renly in the show?

GRRM confirmed he is gay in the books, but it is only hinted at.

Examples (copy and pasted from random internet source):

Now sheathe your bloody sword, or I’ll take it from you and shove it up some place even Renly never found. Jaime to Loras

When the sun has set, no candle can replace it. Loras about Renly

Renly’s little rose? I doubt that. Oberyn about Loras

We had...we had prayed together that night. Loras about Renly

...I got Margaery. You’ll be pleased to know she came to me a maid.

In your bed she’s like to die that way. Renly & Stannis

And it relieved him {Mace} of the difficult task of trying to find lands and a bride for a third son, never easy, and doubly difficult in Ser Loras’s case. Petyr

Oh man, that is the best one :P

OP, it went over my head in the books, too, except that when Sansa and Loras were talking I sort of suspected something. The Rainbow Guards never seemed gay to me I thought Renly was just . . . colorful.

:dunce:

The great thing about Sansa's conversation with Loras is that she immediately assumes Loras is angry with her for bringing up the subject of him having to kill Robar Royce. But reading the subtext of the conversation leads the reader to realize Loras is upset about Renly's death instead.

George R. R. Martin has explicity said that the Rainbow Guard wasn't symbolizing Renly's homosexuality, it had something to do with the colors of the Seven and the Faith, I believe.

Yeah I see it now. When I was reading it I considered the rainbow guards and his flamboyance just as a way to distinguish himself from his brothers. But I did tell that there was a strong relationship between Loras and Renly...just not that strong. More like best friends lol.

Might have not been that way when he wrote it, but it sure as hell is now!

Haha! Here a quote from the wiki for those interested:

The Rainbow Guard is an organization created by Renly Baratheon to serve a similar purpose to the Kingsguard. Its members wear rainbow cloaks and have a rainbow coat of arms. This connects them to the Faith of the Seven (to whom the rainbow is a religious symbol). Each member is described as wearing armor of a single different color, with the group of seven together representing the seven-colored rainbow.
