I'd be interested to know which characters you're surprised GRRM hasn't killed off already.

That's a hard one because I feel it's no ones time yet.

Except Walder Frey of course. That guy has lived for way too long.

Cersei. I didn't expect her to make it this far.

I have the feeling she'll die in TWOW, but not now, not yet. First she had to invite chaos to the realm, we had to see her downfall, how she really is. I'd be really surprised if she makes it to the end of the series, assuming A Dream of Spring will be the last book. I think not.

For one, i'd really like to know if the Greatjon is still being held captive at the Twins, or did he died somewhere off-page. I hope he is still very much alive and is right now being rescued by the 'Blackfish', oh yeah, I like that.

Samwell.

I watched the first season of the TV show before reading the books and when he was introduced I was certain that he'd be killed off as soon as he stepped a foot North of the Wall.

Sansa...in KL's environment she did well. Not that I atributte her survival due to her 'heroic' (what some people say) acts but actually more because there were people there looking out for her. Unexpected allies with interests in her survival.

If a character very clearly couldn't survive in a given scenario, they will survive.

Sam the Slayer just goes around banging inbreds, killing White Walkers, sneaking children across the wall, and rigging the LC election like its no big deal

I can't be "surprised" that any main character is still alive. While Martin will kill some characters, its still a story and more main characters live than die.

But there are some more minor characters I thought might have bit the dust by now.

Jojen, Bronn, Selmy, Grenn & Pyp...

The Hound ... for no other reason than his expanding role keeps surprising me.

Gregor. The guy just seems like the first mission boss or something.

I totally thought Stannis was done after A Clash of Kings as well.  I don't want him to sit the Iron Throne, and I think he actually gets more free passes for his bad/ambiguous deeds than any other character in the series (not within the books but from readers), but damn, the man doesn't give up, I'll give him that.

This is the most sound analysis I have ever seen,  basically.

Stannis - all of the other 5 kings are dead, and he's done too much insane shit to really be alive by now:

- Siege of Storm's End
- Taking down the Iron Fleet
- Battle of Blackwater
- His Northern Campaign

He is, as far as I know, still alive. Held captive in the Twins.

Jaime
Brienne
Stannis
Lady Stoneheart

Tyrion, if he weren't one of the main protagonists.
