I watched the first season of the TV show before reading the books and when he was introduced I was certain that he'd be killed off as soon as he stepped a foot North of the Wall.

If a character very clearly couldn't survive in a given scenario, they will survive.
Sam the Slayer just goes around banging inbreds, killing White Walkers, sneaking children across the wall, and rigging the LC election like its no big deal
