All players must ..

A1) Have an account on the mafia discussion board , with the same account name as on the main board

A2) Log in and view the game thread and the discussion board anonymously at all times, unless they have informed the mods that this is not possible for technical reasons. (If you see that somebody playing isn't viewing the thread anonymously, don't post this information on the thread, because that would be silly.)

A3) Post at least once every 24 hours.

Before the start of day 2 - No modkills for inactivity. Replacements will be sought for players who don't post in any 24 hour period.

After the start of day 2 - If a player doesn't post in a 24 hour period, the first option is replacement. If no replacement is available, then the player will be modkilled.

The mods may grant extensions to this 24 hour time limit in some cases. Please contact the mods as early as possible if you wish to request an extension.

A4) Send in role prescribed night actions (including the desire to take no action) within the time limit. (The mods encourage players to send in night actions before night falls, if this is practical and won't unduly influence your choice of action).

A5) Treat everybody involved in the game with courtesy and respect.

A6) Make any edits the mods request of them as soon as possible, whether or not they believe that the posts need to be edited.

A7) Contact the game mods as soon as possible if you feel you are at risk of breaking a rule or fear they or another person may have already done so. (Please do not post about possible rule violations on the thread itself.)

Players must not ...

B1) Act in any way intended to reduce the chance of their faction achieving its win conditions. (However, should all surviving members of the evil faction agree that they wish to resign and end the game early, they may do so by PMing the mods privately, without stating their intentions on-thread until the mods post to announce that the game is over.)

B2) Discuss the game with any other living players outside this game thread except when told they may do so in their role PMs.

B3) Reveal any information about the game at all in any other thread than this one, or in any other forum (including message boards and chat rooms) where it may be seen by a living player.

B4) Give anybody but the mods access to any of their accounts (including game alts), either here or on the mafia discussion board.

B5) Attempt to obtain advice about the game from anybody not currently playing.

B6) Post information on the thread relating to another player's past or current activity on (or absence from) the board that would not otherwise be available to anybody reading the thread.

B7) Quote, in whole or part, PMs from (or other private conversations with) the mods on the thread, or discuss the timing of any PMs sent to the mods.

B8) Post on the thread at any time after they are dead until the mods themselves post on the thread to announce that the game is over. Any posts made (accidentally or otherwise) after death should be immediately edited blank.

B9) Make any bets about the game.

B10) Make any posts to the game thread with any account other than their game alt, before the game is over. Any posts made "out-of-alt" should be edited blank as soon as possible.

B11) Speculate about the identify behind the alt of any living player, expose the identity of any living player or provide information that the mods consider reasonably likely to cause a person's identity to be exposed.

B12) Offer to break any of these rules or any other rules the mods have set in place for the game, encourage others to do so or help to conceal the fact that rules have been broken.

AND JUST SO YOU KNOW -

C1) Failure to comply with the rules may result in any punishment the mods deem appropriate, including, but not limited to: a request to edit posts; formal warnings on thread; "modkilling", and ending the game prematurely in favor of one faction or none. The mods will also report rule infractions to the metamods after the game. Except where clearly stated in the rules, the mods are free to respond to any rules violation in whatever manner they wish. In all cases the mods' decision on these matters is final.

C2) Feel free to PM or IM your thoughts (or questions) to the mods. We love to hear them!

C3) The mods reserve the right to amend the rules during the game if we realize we've forgotten to cover something. Or, you know, if we have any other reason.

-------------------------

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spoiler thread on the discussion board. Anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. Please note that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. In particular, players who are modkilled for inactivity will not be spoiled. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so.

Once given access to the thread, spoiled spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not ...

D1) Share any information from the spoiler thread with living players, or post such in a forum where it may be seen by living players.

D2) Offer any advice, hints or strategy to living players.

D3) Make personal attacks on players in the game or on posters in the spoiler thread itself

D4) Post on the game thread before the mods announce that the game is over.

Spectators (of any sort) who ignore these rules are likely to have their access to the spoiler thread revoked and to be reported to the metamods.

Game Mechanics

1 - General Structure

Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started on the thread. The game begins during the day. The day ends when when a sufficient number of people have voted to lynch a player (remove that player from the game) or voted to end the day without a lynch. The mods will post maximum time limits for the length of a day on the game thread. If no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, night begins. The mods will then post a scene reporting the outcome of the day. Players may continue posting in the thread but no voting is allowed. Night ends when the mods post the morning scene reporting the outcome of the night actions. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase

During the day, players may post in the thread and vote. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day. See the role list for details.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics

To vote for a player: bold that player's name

To vote to end the day without a lynch: bold the word night.

To change your vote: bold the other player's name (or bold night).

To remove your vote without casting a new vote: bold the phrase remove vote or unvote.

2.2 - Voting Restrictions

You may only vote during the day phase. This means you can only have one vote outstanding at any time. You may not vote for yourself. You may not edit a vote into a post. You may not edit a vote out of a post. Edited Votes into Posts will not be considered valid.

2.3 - Bold Restrictions

The use of bold should be limited to voting, except in some cases and for some specific roles. If you want to emphasize a players name or another word, you can underline the word or post using a different color

2.4 - Majority Defined

A majority means either more than half of the active players voting for one player's lynch or half or more of the active players voting to go to night without a lynch.

2.5 - Ending the Day

The day ends as soon as a majority is reached (or, if the players fail to vote for any action, once the time limit for the day has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer an active player and must not post in the thread. Votes can no longer be withdrawn and new votes cannot be cast until the night phase ends.

2.6 - Evening Scene

The mods will post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions. If the day ended with a player's lynch, the mods will also reveal the alt, alignment, and faction of the lynched player

3 - Night Phase

During the night, players may post in the thread but may not vote. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. See the role list for details.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action

If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear in the description of the role: see the role list. If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. The game will also have a time limit on the maximum length of a night. All players must PM their night actions to the mods within this timeframe. Players are strongly encouraged to send their night actions as soon as possible; you may also send in a PM for your special action during the day phase.

3.2 - Contingent PM

If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods.

3.3 - Provisional PM

You may choose to send a provisional PM if you want to further consider your night action but do not want to extend the night if all other roled players have decided upon their actions. Provisional PMs must be clearly marked as such. A provisional PM will not be acted upon by the mods until it becomes a 'definite PM.' A provisional PM becomes definite as soon as ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM, ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired, or ( c ) all other roled players have submitted their actions. As a courtesy to other players we ask that you confirm your provisional PM as soon as you are able.

3.4 - Last Resort PM

In extraordinary circumstances you may be allowed to send in a last resort PM. A last resort PM will not be acted upon by the mods until ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM or ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired. Should you need to send a last resort PM, you must first seek the mods approval by explaining the circumstances that necessitate such a PM. Last resort PMs are accepted only at the discretion of the mods.

3.5 - Failure to PM

If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods or may risk further penalties.

3.6 - Changing a Night Action

PMs to the mod can be changed at any point before the new day is announced. A PM is considered to be changed only after the mod receives and has read the PM. The player bears the risk that the mod will post the morning scene after the player has sent in a new PM but before the mod has actually read it. In this case the action originally indicated will be performed.

3.7 - Abusing the Time Limit

The time limit for the night begins as soon as the previous day ended, regardless of when the mods posted the evening scene. However, this time limit is a maximum limit, and all players should send in PMs as soon as they feel comfortable doing so. Players (and mods) prefer shorter nights, as people are anxious to see who may have died and to begin voting again. If the mods feel that a player is abusing the time limit by unreasonably stalling, they may force the player to take no night action or take other appropriate action.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions

Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect.

3.9 - Morning Scene

The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene shortly after all night action PMs have been received. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night, and will reveal the alts, alignments, and factions of all of the players killed. There are no hidden clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who have been killed at night will no longer be active players and can no longer post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

3.10 - Action PM

In order to make it easier to track a players Night Actions, we will only be acknowledging Actions sent in PMs under the Title "Night Action PM" or something similar. We will confirm the receipt of your PM with a "Noted" reply. If you change your mind about your Night Action, please do not edit your Message, send us a new one and we will acknowledge it if it has arrived before the last action of the Night has come in.

Section 4 - Endgame

The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions

The game ends once one faction has reached its winning conditions, which the mods will state in the game thread.

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are active players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene

The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are an active player.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early

The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers

When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spoiled spectator threads on the discussion board.

Day/Night Time Limits

The day time limit will be set by the mods at the start of each game day. Usually, days will last for 32 hours. However, some days may be shorter or longer as necessary.

The night time limit will always be 8 hours (though hopefully most nights won't last that long).

Coroner Finder

After any player in this game dies, the mod-controlled Coroner Finder will reveal his alt, alignment, and faction.

Setup

This is a multi-faction game. But I promise that there is no cult.

The following roles may be used in this game. All roles could possibly be modified, limited, and/or combined in various ways.

Aligned with Evil

Assassin - Killer aligned with one of the evil factions. Can kill at night. May have one or more partners. CF result is evil + faction.

Sympathizer - Aligned with evil, but cannot communicate with his masters. Must survive until the end of the game to win. CF result is innocent.

Aligned with The Bloody Nine (Innocent)

Sworn Companions - Two friends who can communicate outside the game. Both are innocent. If one dies, the other becomes bulletproof and can survive 1 night kill attempt.

Aligned with Any Faction

Inquisitor - As a member of the Royal Inquisition, he knows how to get to the truth of things. First, by snooping around. Second, by asking questions. And last, if he doesn't get the answers he wants, by using less....friendly.....methods. His knives are sharpened, and he's ready to figure this out. At night, he can investigate one player to learn both his alignment and his faction.

Northern Scout - Trained in the North as a scout, can silently track any player during the night. Watches to see if that player takes any night action. Unfortunately, he is very forgetful, and can never seem to remember the nature of the action. He just knows whether or not his target took an action during the night.

Naive Altruist - This is a difficult world. A bloody world. People die. But the Naive Altruist wants to make a difference! He wants to save lives! So he's got his bandages and his herbs and his heart full of good intentions. At night, he can choose a target to protect (not including himself). He won't get in the way of a killer, but if one strikes, then he'll be quick to act, by attempting to save the target's life. Unfortunately, like I said....this is a bloody world. So he won't always be completely successful. He'll have a 25% chance of delaying death for 1 day, a 25% chance of delaying death for 2 extra days, and a 50% chance of completely saving his target. Hey, nobody's perfect! At least he's trying.

Magic Healer - Man, that Naive Altruist guy sucks, right? Screw bandages and Herbs - the Magic Healer is 100% successful all of the time. When he wants to save somebody, he does it (including himself). Because he uses magic. Duh.

Coward - He's not a fighter. He's not brave. He's definitely not willing to risk his life. He's really just looking for a place to hide. Ride this out while the rest of you kill each other. At night, he can hide behind one other player for protection. If somebody tries to kill the Coward, he'll just find empty blankets. But if somebody tries to kill the player who the Coward is hiding behind...he gets a bonus and kills the Coward as well.

Knight of the Body - He has been trained as an elite knight of the Union. Spent much of his life protecting the king. If anybody knows how to guard things, its him. But now that he's in this mess, he's less concerned about keeping people safe, and more concerned about keeping people from murdering his friends. So at night, he can choose one other player to "guard". And by "guard", I mean stand 10 feet away with sword drawn, to make sure he doesn't do anything evil while people sleep.

Knight Herald - Not quite as good at fighting as the Knight of the Body....but the Knight Herald sure can pass messages! And he'll brave any danger to do it. Once during the game, he can submit a message of 100 words or less to the mods, and they will post it with the next morning scene.

Survivor - He knows how to survive. Not going to let anybody take him down. At least, not without a fight. He will survive the first attempt to kill him at night. The second time, though....he won't be so lucky.

Magister of the Guild of Spicers - He is a man of influence. The head of one of the wealthiest merchant houses in the world. And he has money to spend. What better way to use it than to buy extra votes? On days 1 and 2, he can cast a mystery vote (in addition to his normal vote). The mods will not reveal the identity of the player controlling the mystery votes.

Soldier - He is a veteran of a hundred battles. A man of experience. He doesn't fall easily. And if he reaches the end of the game - a 1 on 1 showdown between 2 final players, then you know who to bet on. The Soldier is going to win, without a doubt.

Taker of Forms - Stealing the identity of another person....a dark art indeed. But sometimes necessary. Twice during the game, this player can steal the alt of another player. The mods will change the alt's password, and give it to the Taker of Forms. This will last for a period of one hour. During this time, the player who lost his alt must sit quietly out of the game. The Taker of Forms will have full control. Then, after an hour, the Taker of Forms will give up the alt, the password will be reset, and the original player will gain control again.

Holder of the Seed - It is forbidden to touch the Other Side. The demons who once walked the world will do anything and say anything to reclaim the power that they lost long ago. The Seed is a powerful artifact, a piece of the Other Side, made whole in our reality. It can be used to murder thousands, to destroy nations, to bring civilization to its knees. But there are always consequences.

The Holder of the Seed has the power to kill one player during the daytime. His kill cannot be stopped. He will not die from taking the action. The day will not end. However, there are serious repercussions to using such a dangerous item. Beware the lust for power. You have been warned.

There will be at least one Roleless Innocent in this game. Probably more than one. This is the PM they will receive.

You are Roleless Innocent. Pretty fucking brutal in a dark and bloody world like this. All you have to rely on is your limited intellect. Sucks for you. Good luck!

The Bloody Nine faction (innocent) wins when all Assassins are dead.

An Assassin faction (evil) wins when all other players are dead, or the faction outnumbers all other players and its win becomes an inevitable certainty.

Note that any Sympathizer must survive until the end of the game to win with his Assassin masters.

An invitation. Nothing special - just a simple card with a time and location. A request for your presence. Normally, something you'd throw away without a second thought. But for some reason, this time, you couldn't ignore it. You couldn't forget about it. You had to go.

Something was calling you there.

So you arrived at an empty arena. Maybe 200 feet across in every direction, with walls 15 feet high on all sides. In the middle stood a small platform, and next to that, a wide pit. Soon, others gather. You recognize some of them, but not all. A few friends, a few enemies. A dangerous crowd. Your hand never strays far from the blade hanging at your side.

An hour passes. Then another. You start to lose your patience. But eventually, a large man enters the arena, and climbs the platform. He's a Northman, covered in scars, with a dead look in his eyes. A cold bastard, and there's no doubt. Logen Ninefingers. The Bloody Nine. A name to make even the toughest man feel a chill.

His voice rumbles across the small group.

There's a lot of evil in this world. A lot of evil. More than its fair share. And I reckon I'm tired of seeing it always win.

Not much a man like me can do. I'm nothing special. But my father always said, its better to do a thing than to live in fear of it. So here I am.

And here you are.

We got the whole host of shit-sucking liars here. Barely an honest face in the bunch. But some better than others. Maybe. I'm hoping that some of you will stand with me. Some of you will want to put an end to the power hungry bastards who use us all like puppets. Some of you will want to take a stand.

Just to make it interesting, we're gonna do it all civilized. No battle, no blood. At least not yet. We're gonna root out the evil with our minds. We're gonna cast votes. And hopefully, when we're done, just the honest and the innocent will be left standing. And the world will be a better place for it.

He steps down, and walks toward the deep hole in the ground.

When you decide somebody's turned dark, throw 'em in the pit.

It's here for your safety.

Cuz that's where I'll be waiting.

Inquisitor Glokta, hwo very nice of you to join us.

(Also, can I please request that spoilers are hidden behind spoiler tags, as I'm not done with the books yet.)

All you need to know is that The Dogman is the best character in the books.
