Gary Lightbody from the British band Snow Patrol will be cameoing in Season 3 of Game of Thrones. He has said this is not a large role, so probably more likely to be a featured extra kind of thing. Lightbody and his bandmates have been big fans of the show since it started, frequently Tweeting about it and reccing it on their fan pages. Lightbody got into a mock Twitter-feud with a BBC Radio 1 DJ a couple of months ago after the latter was inadvertantly spoiled on a major plot point before it happened.

He included a picture of himself in costume. A little while ago he also posted a picture of himself hanging out with producers Benioff and Weiss in Belfast.

I love this suggestion; from his description, someone in the BWB definitely sounds plausible. Or the Mountain's men, or the Bloody Mummers. Gary L is very very tall, does that give us any clues?

I doubt it'd be a recurring role involving him to be around for any length of time. It's probably something that can be done in a couple of days (which doesn't necessarily rule out Lemoncloak or Tom, if they've been reduced to background characters).

Plus Tom is a singer. From the picture he tweeted certainly looks like he could be a part of the BWB.

Maybe he is the original Reek?
He would just have to be there for two or three minutes

If he has more than a single line of dialogue I'll be shocked.

On his blog Werthead made the the good point that GoT has a low profile in the UK and 'stunt casting' like this might help raise that profile. I guess it can't hurt but I'm a little sceptical since for UK viewers, GoT is one big exercise in "oh, that's thing from Holby/A. N. Other Soap isn't it?". If they rally want to raise the profile of the show in the UK then they need to release it to a more mainstream channel even if it means showing it 12 months after Sky Atlantic. This happens with the Walking Dead which is shown on FX 6-9 months ahead of its airing on Channel 5. To illustrate the difference further, Mad Men was pulling around 300,000 viewers on a free to air channel here in the UK, it moved to Sky Atlantic and went down to 70,000.

I think that stunt casting will do little to raise ratings until more people simply have access to the show here.

I was thinking Reek version 1.0.

But BWB is possible.  Harwin from Winterfell who chases down Arya?

Honestly, he's probably just an extra, or a featured extra.  I'd be surprised if he speaks at all.  You never know, though!

I'm sorry that's simply not true, most people I know have seen it and all the books are currently in the 50 best sellers listings.

GoTs got a higher profile than Snow Patrol do these days.

What in the world does “reccing” mean?

Is it like paniccing and picniccing and magiccing, so the kind of pain that comes from having a missing K key? : )

And most of the people I know haven't seen it, but that just means our personal experience of things is difficult to generalise because it depends on the circles you mingle in. Facts are that 850,000 people in the UK watch GoT on the only channel that it's legally available from, which is about the same as Geordie Shore (the UK equivalent of Jersey Shore).

Stunt casting like this is not so much about the popularity of person being cast, it's about creating a quirky bit showbiz news that will get into the papers because, hey, it's weird to see the singer from a fey indie rock bank in a medieval swords, sorcery and sex show. It would be even better if it got leaked that he gets a gruesome death given how irredeemably wimpy his music is.

Dont forget illegal downloading... GoT is the most pirated show, so I dont really think audiences of a network are really significant.

I'm not surprised it is , given the limited access people have overseas .  I wish Gary had an extended role though, that would have been fun

On a side note , I youtubed Geordie shore. Never again.

I wouldn't really agree with that statement for instance about 20 people i know actually know anything about AGOT and only about 5 or 6 actually watch whereas every person i know has heard of and probably listened to at least one or two snow patrol songs and i would say this is similar throughout alot of Ireland and Britain therefore as has been mentioned before having a well known face like Gary appearing in the show will increase the shows popularity by quite alot in these areas

Sorry HouseLark has already basically said the exact same thing
