There are some great characters in aSoIaF, but are there any characters that, if something was revealed about them, you would like them less? Such as, if Cersei and Jaime were Targs, if R+L=J is true or not true, or any number of other things.

For example, If it turned out that Euron was lying about all of his travels to Valyria and elsewhere, I would instantly disown most of my unreasoning love for him. I think that those travels are precisely what make him so cool, the idea that he is a fearless explorer and not just a gigantic jackass.

So, does anyone else have any characters like that? Characters that you would like much less if something turned out to be true/not true about them?

If it turns out that Cersei is a born-evil character who killed her friend (Mellara?) as a child. It would piss me off intensely.

Ditto WK on Cersei.  I am really hoping that she did NOT kill her friend.

I would also be bitterly disappointed if Sansa loses her moral compass and accepts Littlefinger and his horrid influence.  I want her to get away from him.

For me, there's a certain point in my investment in a long-running entity like this, or a TV show in its fourth or fifth season, where I start discounting developments that I can't buy as consistent with what has come before and just say instead that the writer has "written that person wrong."  That's what I would do with the Cercei/Melara thing - just write it off as not "really" having happened, because I think it would be more than a little over the top at this point.  Likewise, It wouldn't ruin the characters themselves if any of the Lannisters turned out to be Targaryans, I think I would probably just pretend it hadn't happened.

I don't know about the born-evil thing, but as for killing Melara ... yes, yes she did. :(

Isn't Cersei killing Melara kind of a given, though? Melara's death was "in the tent" with her, so close that she could feel "her" breath. Cersei recalls her wailing when she's trapped down the well, writes off all notions of a friendship with her, and compares her to her son's (apparent) murderer. To top it off, Melara is there with all the other people she's wronged during the walk, staring at her with "accusing eyes."

Could that be more damning?

What Jamie (sic) Lannister said. Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck, it's a duck.

If Arya stayed with the FM.
If Cersei ever repented.
If Dany never made it to Westeros.
If Tyrion never made it back to and got what he deserved.
If Sansa stayed with LF and participated in all his diabolical plans.
If Rickon turned out to be really practical and understanding.
If Bran stayed in the cave.

You need to do a little math, but it isn't exactly intergration by parts with odd trigonometric expressions.

Quote

Cersei had not had a friend she so enjoyed since Melara Hetherspoon, and Melara had turned out to be a greedy little schemer with ideas above her station. I should not think ill of her. She’s dead and drowned, and she taught me never to trust anyone but Jaime.

The poor boy was always alone. I had Jaime when I was a child... and Melara, until she fell into the well.

“Please,” begged Melara. “Just tell us our futures, then we’ll go.”
“Some are here who have no futures,” Maggy muttered in her terrible deep voice.

“Not Jaime, nor any other man,” said Maggy. “Worms will have your maidenhead. Your death is here tonight, little one. Can you smell her breath? She is very close.”

“The maegi.” The words came tumbling out of her. She could still hear Melara Hetherspoon insisting that if they never spoke about the prophecies, they would not come true. She was not so silent in the well, though. She screamed and shouted.

^ The part where Cersei knows what Melara sounded like while she was drowning in the well should be Exhibit A in this case.

Walder Frey dying in bed with his young wife.  :ack:

Rickon and Shaggydog being dead and or killed on screen. :bawl:

Tyrion being a dragon-rider or the third head of the dragon or anything else targ and/or dragon related.  :ack:

These are things that could very well happen, alas.

ETA: these revelations would ruin the characters (two of which I can't stand) for me, they'd ruin the character's storyline.

Also, he turns out to the be the big hero, completely redeemed, gets away with all his crimes, comes back to Westeros as Dany's Hand and the Lord of CR. :ack:

Jon not being Lyanna and Rhaegar's son. I don't know why, it's just...I've put so much faith in this that I almost accept it as fact now. It would have to be some kind of amazing reveal if he isn't for me not to feel disappointed.

Tyrion not being Tywin's son. It wouldn't exactly ruin the character for me, because I like him far too much for that to happen now, but it kinda messes up the whole "Tyrion is Tywin's son" quote by his aunt Genna which I really like :/

Melisandre having anything to do with "resurrecting" Jon Snow and as much as I love Jon, I just don't want him to end up as Jon Stark- Lord of Winterfell, it's not right

If Bran would be somewhat responsible for Jojen's inevitable death.

Jon Snow or Aegon being the prince who was promised, or anything to do with Jon/Dany falling in lurve and having magical babies together. :ack: I like both characters, but no.

Any of the Lannisters being secret Targaryens. No, they are Lannisters(an important family in the story) and their POVs helped the reader understand what it means to be a Lannister. I feel that if the most significant Lannisters(Jaime, Cersei, Tyrion) turn out to be Targaryen bastards, it would somehow cheapen them. I'm probably not making sense, but let's just say I wouldn't like it one bit...
