Fun hypothetical... If the War of the Five Kings had never occurred, who would Robb have been betrothed to?

Alys Karstark I think. Didn't she tell Jon their parents discussed a marriage

I think Ned would've stuck closer to home for Robb. One of Manderly's granddaughters or a Mormont girl, maybe. Or Alys Karstark. Arianne was being held for Viserys, and the Tyrells would probably still hold Margaery free in case Joffrey "opened up" or the Sansa betrothal fell through. I think that's it as far as noteworthy paramount daughters are concerned. Always Myrcella, I guess, but if Joffrey married Sansa that'd be a redundant partnership.

I agree, if joff maries sansa there is no point in robb marrying myrcella unless its for love and not duty.

Had there been no war and the twincest not been discovered....

Robb & Myrcella

Edit: Apparently that has been mentioned... I think it would have gone along with Sansa & Joffrey to completely intertwine the Starks and Baratheons based solely on the great friendship between Ned and Robert.

Ehhhhh. *wobbles hand*

I think it's likelier to be seen as redundant. There's already a political alliance there with Joffrey and Sansa. Better to branch out and not put the eggs in one basket.

There was someone who wanted to marry Rob to Myrcella, so it isn't that big of a stretch. Considering Ned's apolitical outlook, he might not have chosen anyone for Robb and let him choose himself.

He'd worry about his daughters, but largely because finding them a suitable husband (if Sansa wasn't still going to marry Joffery) is part of looking out for them.

Considering Ned married a southern gal, I think it would be good PR for the next Lady Stark to be a northern gal. Also, in the last 15 years or so Ned has been keeping the north to the north, so I think it would be more likely that he would prefer a northern lady for Robb.

That's my thinking, too. Ned saw what a mess his father's southern ambitions ultimately caused. I got the sense that, although he loved Catelyn, he meant to keep his family in the region.

I'd go with either
  • Wylla Manderly
  • Alys Karstark
  • Shireen Barartheon
  • Lyanna Mormont
  • Meera Reed (The Dark Horse)
  • Myrcella Baratheon

Yes, but with the two marriages that would have a Stark queen in KL, along with the daughter of a queen married to a Stark in Winterfell.  Plus, Ned still has Bran, Rickon and Arya to marry off to other great houses to realy make the Starks the most powerful house in Westeros.

But I don't think Ned wanted them married off to the other great houses. I think he probably would've preferred to make good northern marriages for them.

Stand by what I said — two Stark-Lannister/Baratheon matches are redundant. One will do and a second is beating a dead horse.

What about Arianne Martell? Spice things up a little in the north, join two great houses, a little ice and fire.

Doran was "holding" her for Viserys, remember. He'd've said no and I doubt Ned would've looked that far south anyway.

Can this thread possibly form into a how could House Stark have capitalised to the MAX on the Joffrey/Sansa marriage?

That is the way that many lords would think, but I really don't think Ned thought like that. He has seen first hand his brother, sister and father die because of ambitions in the south. The Ned don't do the Game of Thrones.

There's precedent with Daeron II/ Myriah and Maron/ Daenerys for that not being seen as "redundant."

I say Ned would have preferred the far northern alliance = Val + Robb
