Because he is more than likely the "hero" character of the books I'd say, if R+L is true, you might even say it's named after him.

Dany seems more the character to grow to immense power, and they usually don't survive the epic stories.

Pretty much what Lost Cause said... she is to ubber to survive. She is actually one of my favorite characters, but I have a feeling she will die on the last half of the last book.

I left out Theon!  How did I forget him?  
He takes Jon's spot.  Don't see him living through his imprisonment with Stannis.

Stannis is one of the most-mentioned characters in the series, and drives quite a bit of action.  I'm not sure how that makes him "not an important character."
