Could Robert Barantheon have defeated Arthur Dayne?

Here we go. It's a question that I've messed around with a bit, but I haven't thought about extensively. As of right now, I couldn't say who would live, though I'm leaning very slightly towards Robert. Both men were said to have been the greatest warrior of their time, no? Both from Houses known for their martial prowess, though I give the Daynes an edge here with their Swords of the Morning. But Robert was bigger and stronger even than the White Bull, he was also younger, right? I haven't done much research, which is why I started this thread. I do know thatbEddard once stated that Arthur was the finest knight he'd ever known. Had Robert taken Knight's vows ever? I'm not sure. Anyway, in a fight to the death, single combat, Robert's hammer vs Dawn, who would win?

I learned from Ser Arthur Dayne , the sword of the morning, who could have slain all five of you with his left hand while he was taking a piss with his right

Robert wouldn't stand a chance. He'd raise his warhammer and get gutted like a fish by Dawn.

No one is infallible. As Selmy tells us, conditions can make all the difference. Robert had a berserker's valour, there's no telling what he might have done. Even though Dayne was a master swordsman, Robert was a great warrior himself, someone born to fight. So who knows?

Whatever the outcome, I'm Robert would at least stretch Arthur's abilities to their limits.

Robert was strong and strong and that pretty much covers it. He never won a tourney. Arthur Dayne is remembered as an exquisite opponent and he would have slain Robert if they we ever to fight against each other in a one to one combat. Robert had strength but lacked skills and a certain agility. His hammer would be an amazing weapon in a battle, surrounded by enemies but in a single combat it would be too heavy and slow him down.

Honestly? We don't know. There's not enough evidence to reach either conclusion.

I'd say Dayne, several men have praised him as both an excellent knight and an excellent soldier. Plus he has a weapon that is roughly equivalent to Valyrian steel (I don't know, I think it is better, but then again there's no real ability to draw a comparison. Of course, both are superior to normal weapons).

We also have Jaime who thinks he could beat Robert, but thinks Dayne his better. Of course, he does have the Dayne hero worship going as well.

As far as other factors go, I think that while sword is probably not as good as hammer against plate, in most situations, Valryian steel is probably just as good as a hammer at opening armour.

Going by reputation, I'd give it to Dayne, but honestly we just don't have the information.

I'm gonna go against the grain here, and keep in mind Arthur Dayne is my favorite character. Robert would win. A real fight isn't a tournament or joust or whoever is the most knightly. Rhaegar was good in tournaments but got utterly destroyed by Robert. Sword for sword, Dayne wins. But Robert isn't wielding a sword, he's wielding a 30 ton mega axe hammer that he can swing with ease. It's like the Dothraki are probably better fighters than most knights but they get pwnd by armor. I think it's a similar situation. Robert is designed to destroy and crush swordsmen.

Now I do think a fighter like the Red Viper could outmanuever him and get him from afar, but Dayne is too honorable and would fight with the sword. Again pains me to say it but Robert wins.

I think Arthur Dayne wins.

Everyone* in the books believes that Dayne was a great warrior. Unbeatable in single combat.

I believe Robert was a great warrior.

Rhaegar, now, believes that Robert was a great warrior.

Ned believes Robert was a great warrior.

Robert believes Robert was a great warrior.

Who else?

* except Darkstar who thought it was the sword

Robert never won a joust at tourney; I believe he's described as having won numerous melees.

Dawn may be able to pierce Robert's plate, but it can't block a hammer, and a person can continue fighting for several minutes after getting cut with a sword; they could very well have killed each other.

Who knows? Robert could beat Dayne. Its a pure guess if he would. Dayne seems to be regarded as a better fighter. So if they fought each other 100 times, Dayne would probably win 60 or 70 times, but its not basketball. Its a one time contest, winner takes all. Robert just has to be better (or luckier) than Dayne at that one moment.

I dont know, a sword is a pretty horrible weapon to use against plate, even if it is magic.(its not a lightsaber) A hammer on the other hand is designed for plate armored combat. And robert is very skilled, but all being said I think dayne would win. His raw skill would be to much, but it would be a close run thing not easy as some are suggesting.

I know folks sing well of Dayne and his Sword of the Morning Dawn but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

The best swordsman was Ser Selmy. Thinking about it long and hard I think Dayne wins . . Dayne was just too fast for Robert.

Selmy and Jaime Lannister are best with swords.

This could have been answered with one word -

"No."

Disagree. Plus GRRM has spoken of how they are equals if they both use normal steel, however if Dayne is wielding Dawn then it's game over for Selmy.
