From reading these forums it seems it's rather 50/50.

It's not that surprising since GRRM writes so many strong female characters.

But Medieval Fantasy doesn't seem like a genre most girls would pickup off the shelf with enthusiasm.

Have most of the women on here started reading after watching the show (like myself), or because one of your male friends recommended it?

Ya i would say its nealry 50/50. From the evidence of the board it seems to have a really broad range of readers

Oh wow.

It might interest you to know that women read more than men in general and this flows over into fantasy.

But it's nice of you to assume that the only way us ladies'd have found the series was through the show or gentlemen friends.

Seriously, why doesn't a newbie ever question why there are so many men on the forums?

Didn't mean to offend anyone.

I'm not supposed that women read more than men.

Like I said, I started reading because of the show.

Most women I know don't watch the show or have any general interest in this type of genre.

Good question. I did start reading after I started watching the show. I hadn't heard of the books, but when I saw a few months back before the show started that it was books first I waited to see if the show was any good before I picked up the books. I love to read and needed something new to read anyway. I love fantasy. My mother is the one who introduced me to The Wheel of Time, and the Eragon series. So now here I am minus the unnecessary attitude.

I don't think the attitude was needed towards the OP...he was asking a question. I think it's an interesting one, but you're having a go at him for making assumptions, whereas I think he had assumptions but then had reason to question them, so was asking people on here. He's challenging his views on the assumptions he had, so having a go at him for making assumptions is a little bit silly.

I don't know any women that read the book personally.  I have recommended it to a bunch, but they're too busy reading Shades of Grey or simply being bums.

I've recruited a few girls from work, but when I told them each book is about 1000 pages, they laughed.

But yeah from the looks of it on this forum at least, it seems pretty close, close to 50/50.

Haha dont worry about it Billy boy. I dont think you offended too many people unless there of a seriously delicate disposition! Among people i know most have only watched the series i guess because its easier and many people dont like reading. My gf read the books though and while she didnt like them as much as i did but still enjoyed them

Women like fantasy too it's not just for men. GRRM writes strong women characters that appeal to everyone. My brother did introduce me to the series but I than introduced it to different guy friends.

I found about the books because of the show too. Sorry I snapped, but yours is the third thread this year asking the same patronising question and it is quite frankly frustrating to keep having one's presence questioned.

always gets to me when people are put off by the size of a book. The bigger the better. If its a good book it just means your going to have more time to enjoy it

Pretty much everything on the general thread has been done to death. The only thing new that comes up is something from an interview, or every so often a spoiler chapter

It'd be nice if we didn't  rehash stuff that makes a significant portion of the members feel unwelcome, no?

Yes, because my tone is the issue here.

Sorry, but my vagina is going off right now and won't let me be nice to people who make stupid presumptions.

I don't mind.

I haven't seen this topic explored, mayhaps I should of searched the forum for something similar.

the question may seem patronizing to some.  If I'm trying to get anything out of this topic it's that publishers and marketing executives should learn this is not a series/genre that most may think is strictly for boys.

If you can't be nice, don't post at all. OP wasn't being rude.

Well, I'm female and love fantasy books, favourite genre. Especially seeing as too much historical fiction is like "50 Shades of Big Dresses", and throws history out of the window in favour of pointless rauncy scenes and thin plots. My best friend, who isn't interested in fantasy/sci-fi beyond Harry Potter and Twilight, watched the TV  programme and asked to borrow the first book from me. Now she wants to read them all.

I think it's because ASOIAF has something that will appeal to pretty much anyone, no matter your preferences.

Apologies in advance for any discomfort caused to you or your genitalia. I dont think the OP meant for it to feel unwelcoming and im sure he would sincerely apologise if anything he said made someone feel so. As a forum this ones pretty top notch for looking after its members and its a shame youd feel that way. It is true though that things go round and round. I havent been able to look at the R+L=J for many months now!

I dont know that theres anythng can be done to stop it though!

It's fine really.

Please don't get off topic I don't want the thread to be locked.

There's nothing wrong with a healthy debate.
