I can only really think of two positives about Stannis himself. 1 He is the rightful heir. 2. He is a just man, but even then he can take that to the extreme; having Davos lose his fingers seems a bit harsh to me. Yes he was a smuggler but he'd just saved Stannis from starving to death, surely he could have let him off that one time or punish him in a less severe way. I've heard people call him "badass" but how can you call someone who follows the rules a badass. Also he just seems to be Melisandre's puppet, from where I'm standing, every good thing he has accomplished has come from her. If he tries to do anything without her it seems to backfire. Blackwater bay, marching against Ramsey and getting stuck in a blizzard. Not just that but he wanted to burn his own nephew in the hope that it would hatch dragons. How can you get behind someone who was willing to do that? Whether it would have worked or not we don't know but he just depresses to me. He's an iron man, he'll brake before he bends and when he speaks he speaks as those he's got a vendetta against the whole world. Arguably the whole world barring a few is against him, but I honestly can't see what's so great about him and why he's liked so much on this forum.

Um, the siege of storms end, and destruction of the ironborn fleet would disagree with you.

Who's going to be laughing when Ramsay and the Freys march into that blizzard towards those frozen lakes?

Cos he is super sexy... Oh wait because he saved the Night's Watch, My fav characters i.e Jon and Davos respect him, he is fighting the Bolton's and hopefully restoring House Stark to the liege Lords of the North, plus he kicked butt in the WOW gift chapter.

At this point in the series Westeros needs a strong king and things will get worse when the Others and Dargons come.

I think people like his determination and single minded nature. He's a bit like Judge Dredd. Incorruptible. You have to kill Stannis to beat him. He'll never surrender or compromise. Would probably make a dreadful King though. So wrapped up in his own sense of righteousness that he can't even see the evil he has allied himself with.

I admire Stannis because he's a gritty survivor and just relentless in pursuit of his goal.  He should have been killed several times over already, but he's still out there fighting, when so many others are dead.  That says a lot about him.

He has a great tactical mind, I think.  Plus he's just.

Because of his humor. He's so hilarious!!!

Strangely, Stannis smiled.  "Angry foes do not concern me.  Anger makes men stupid, and Hosteen Frey was stupid to begin with, if half of what I have heard of him is true.  Let him come."
"He will."
"Bolton has blundered," the king declared.  "All he had to do was sit inside his castle whilst we starved.  Instead he has sent some portion of his strength forth to give us battle.  His knights will be horsed, ours must fight afoot.  His men will be well nourished, ours go into battle with empty bellies.  It makes no matter.  Ser Stupid, Lord Too-Fat, the Bastard, let them come.

From the start of the series most of us supported House Stark, however since the Red Wedding there has been for many readers a void for whose allegiance we back in westeros. I think why many of us back Stannis is he filled the void that House Stark left, despite Stannis' shortcomings and that he burns people alive he is trying to save the realm from tyranny.

BADASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He should have been dead and buried by now but he's like a force of nature, he just keeps coming. He's like the unstoppable force to everything else's immovable object. Nothing fazes him, he just keeps going like the Terminator.

In fact, it is because he basically IS the terminator, if you think about it.

Also, I'm pretty sure that Stephen Dillane's amazing performance in the show helped him too. You can't help but love this guy in the show, even if they did change his character slightly.

Show spoiler:

Spoiler

I love show Stannis even more than book Stannis.

Stannis is the hip new thing all the cool kids are into these days; the fresh face; the "it" girl.

His debut album is droppin' this Christmas.  Be sure to like his FB page all the latest Stannis content.

Stannis is one of the few characters that I prefer on the TV show rather than in the books (and how I've imagined him).

Even if you read the first five books and didn't love Stannis, I don't see how you could read the gift chapter Martin put up on his website and not love him after that. He's not even a BAMF after that, he transcends it.

War of Five Kings- Had the worst odds, yet is the only king to still be alive

Plus every other sentence from Stannis is like one of the most badass things in the series.

I love how show Stannis is a grammar nazi too.

Stannis: "Fewer."
