The problem is there is absolutely no way to prove that he's alive - aside from letting a Northman into the Frey dungeons to check in on him (which I highly doubt ever happening, we haven't even seen anybody demand proof that a hostage is alive). As mentioned above, why would GRRM maintain this minor plot point (the Greatjon is a prisoner, except basically everybody else from the wedding is dead) if he really was dead? Well besides the fact that it explains how hamstrung the Umbers are - and why their allegience lay where it lay - it also sets the stage for a future breakout. Remember Arya/Rorge/Biter letting the imprisoned northman out of the Harrenhal dungeons?
I see the Greatjon leading a bloody and violent prisoner revolt against the Freys, and us witnessing the ultimate downfall of House Frey. The late Lord Walder wants to f*** with the Tully's? Betray their liege lord and live to tell about it? Not likely. The Freys will soon go the way of the Reynes and Castameres.

I hear a lot of people saying how they want Jaime to ;lead the BwB and such, or maybe Gendry. But I never hear anyone making a case for the Greatjon. I think if he's ever freed then he will be a natural leader for them.

I would just like to remind you that they had a dothraki who GRRM said would reappear killed by Drogo in the series while he was obviously not killed in the book. And that was in season 1. In season 2 the producers have taken much more liberties.

In such case, the prisoners (incl. Greatjon) would probably play important role...

The Lannisters are holding Harrion Karstark at Maidenpool, and that's also where Jaime sent Wylis Manderly ,from where he was sent on home. Randyll Tarly has secured the town and the kings road and has been putting things back in order. Maidenpool would appear to be a major holding and transfer point for Lannister prisoners. Probably that's where the Greatjon would be sent , at least as a first stop.
Not long after sending this order to Lord Frey , when he takes control of Riverrun , Jaime lets ( I think ,)10 men of the Tully garrison go (with 3 days food and no armour ), if they swear not to take up arms against the Lannisters again. The master at arms and captain of the guard ask to take the black, instead. They're allowed to keep their arms and armour ( which they'll need on the wall ) and are sent under escort as far as Maidenpool , where presumably , they'll take ship for the Wall.
Are we looking at all the elements of a prison break and escape , here ?
ETA: I know Tarly was there when Brienne passed through Maidenpool , but don't know exactly when he was summoned to KL. However I can imagine that security might slip a bit after he leaves. ( That's one problem with such a stickler of a commander ..once he's not there, everyone lets out their breath .. sometimes a bit more than they should )

Roose Bolton would not have been comfortable having any witnesses to him killing Robb regardless of their status. I was really pissed that Dacey Mormont was killed, if I was a weasel Frey and she asked me to dance I would have...damn weasels

Lord Farquaad is currently being transported to a trap set by the BwB, he won't be sorting anything out any time soon.....
