The emnity between Dwarves and Woodland Elves in the 'book universe' stems initially (and exclusively?) from the destruction of Doriath in the First Age.  In order to make the friction more immediate and explainable in the films, I am guessing that they had to make the source of the emnity more current, without resorting to another flashback.
It comes both from the destruction of Doriath by the Dwarves and from the fact that the Elves didn't lift a finger to help Moria when they awoke the Balrog - though I wouldn't blame the Elves for that. So both sides are quite pissed off at the other.
PJ basically changed the source of dwarvish bitterness from the fall of Moria to the fall of Erebor.

Hmm, more that the Elves blamed the Dwarves for wakening, or releasing, the Balrog.  I don't remember there being mention of lack of aid after the fall of Moria.

Well, I was wrong about this movie.  It was awesome.  Never felt to me like it dragged or was overly long.  In fact, I was kind of surprised when it ended that it was already over.  I think the movie, and the idea of a trilogy of movies to cover this small book, works well if you accept that it's npt going to be like the book.  It actually didn't feel very much at all like the book to me.  Felt way more epic, which I think works in the context being a prequel to the movie versions of Lord of the Rings.  I thought this movie (and I assume the next 2 will be the same) felt like a prequel to LotR way more than the book did.

It dragged and dragged and dragged.  In thought the color palet they used made it look more like a cartoon in places than live action.

I did. Was pretty good. No real footage shown, except one (almost finished) clip of Gandalf in the High Fells exploring the tombs of the Nazgul, and Radagast appears and they discuss how they broke out. PJ didn't really answer fan questions, only about 4 Twitter ones and 3 video ones, as they spent a little too much time focusing on the videos the actors sent in (dubbed Messages from the cast who couldn't be here, like Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Evangeline Lilly, Billy Boyd, and Dom Monaghan).

They did show some cool behind the scenes shots, though, of Legolas and Tauriel in action fighting orcs. It looks to be pretty epic.

Legolas, fine, but Merry and Pippin? They wouldn't be alive at that time, right?

No, Merry and Pippin are not in it. They just made little guest appearances (the actors, that is). Sorry for not stating that more clearly.

There was plenty of unfinished footage (green screen) of wood elves in action, including first look at Tauriel (which is clearly Silvan for "short elf") and some brief exchanges between Thranduil and Thorin and Thranduil and Legolas.  Seems to me that they cocked up Thranduil with Thorin - the actors were eye-to-eye, when clearly Thran should be much taller than Thorin.  There was also some onset footage of Bard doing stuff, and the Master of Lake-town and his servant.

Another video question was 'submitted' by Stephen Colbert, which was a decently nerdy one (was PJ going to differentiate between the Sinarin Thranduil and Legolas and the more Avari-based elves of the Woodland Realm), but PJ didn't really answer.  From the shots that are on the internet, you can see that the general woodland elves have reddy brown hair.

It's Sindarin for 'Forest Maiden'.

Uh huh.  Now look at the picture from today's webshow.  Then fine tune your irony meter.
