Wasn't Ser Gregor part of Arya's on-screen daily litany? I seem to recall his name usually was at the top of her list. He was, after all, technically the Tickler's and Ser Amory's liege lord.

But I guess people will forget that by season four.

Last night I was thinking that we havent seen enough about the destruction of the Riverlands and the effect on the commoners. This is necessary in order to sympathize with the Brotherhood. Sir Gregor was behind the raping, pillaging, & burning so I believe Season 3 will have to emphasize these points. I fully expect that Season 3 will give us a much closer look at what the Mountain unleashed on the Riverlands. This will provide a natural build up for the fight with Oberyn.

Even though it wasn't shown in the books when the first season of AGOT happened I was really hoping they would show Gregor and his men ambush Dondarrion and his party. That fight with Gregor killing Beric would have established Gregor as the ultimate killing machine and would have made the interrogations of the village ppl in season 2 a lot more clear. Then in season 3, seeing Beric alive would be seen as a huge shocker by those watching who had never read the books.

Hopefully they will have him do something epic in season 3 so people don't forget about Gregor's prescence. Maybe fight and destroy this character "Locke" in order to get revenge on behalf of House Lannister for Jaime's suffering. This would sort of replace his killing of Vargo Hoat in the books and remind viewers of the show why he is so feared.

I think I put his name in earlier in this thread, but the actor that played Andre the Giant in the TV movie is like 7'7".  While not as bulky as Andre the Giant (who was 500+ pounds, if I recall), he's got more meat on him than Ian Whyte.

I definitely think we'll get more focus on Gregor this season via Beric Dondarrion. We've already had Tywin telling him to "set the Riverlands on fire" and saw what his brave companions did at Harrenhal through Arya.

I know 3 TV-only viewers who all recognize him, so that's a good sign imo. Seeing more of his actions and consequences in the Riverlends through Arya this season will definitely be enough I think for people to be emotionally involved, so to speak, by the time he fights Oberyn.

yeah i agree. in season 1 he was called the mountain while in season 2 he was called clegane. so in all honesty i doubt the audience (non-book readers) even knew that they were the same person. especially since he was played by a different actor and wore lannister armor.

He wasn't wearing Lannister armor in Season 2, he just had a Lannister helmet. His armor was the same as in Season 1, with the exception that the shoulder pauldrons were deleted.

And the recast was indeed a problem. I know a new viewer who had no idea that Ian Whyte was the Mountain in Season 2.

I don't think we'll even see the Mountain this season.  You'll probably hear about things that he's done (it seems as if Robb and his army come upon an abandoned Harenhal with dead prisoners strewn about in E1) but he probably won't appear.

If they recast Gregor again Canadian actor Robert Maillet might be perfect. He's 7-1, big built, and acts as intimidating as the Mountain should. He also almost looks exactly like a cross between Ian Whyte and Conan Stevens.

I know they usually prefer EU actors for roles but I think they make exceptions for hard to cast roles like Tyrion, Khal Drogo and the original Gregor.

I think we will see the Mountain this season. He was left in charge of Harrenhal when Tywin left for King's Landing, and now Robb is going to take Harrenhal and leave Roose Bolton commanding the garrison. I don't think they'd do that without Gregor. Unfortunately, I think it's still going to be Ian Whyte. That Robert Maillet Harad Hardrada mentioned looks good for the part, but I don't want Gregor to be recast once again. Either bring Conan Stevens back or just leave Ian Whyte in his role.

A lot of changes fans (readers and not) had problems with season two, but they were all tolerable.
But the Gregor thing seemed D and D only real terrible blunder.
They have painted themselves into a corner on the Mountain. My impression is Whyte is not an actor, they have time, but the duel is an important event and I don't know how they are going to solve it's representation.

Yes, he's a stunt actor. I would love to see a real actor in Gregor's shoes, but I don't think it's a good idea to bring another actor to play him. People need to be familiar with his face, so it should be either Ian Whyte or Conan Stevens IMHO. I really hope they manage to bring Conan back, he was perfect.

Nothing against Whyte, but he was very forgettable.  Maybe that was the idea...with as few of scenes as he has, I don't get why Stevens couldn't do both.  Not like either his role in The Hobbit or GOT was a big main character.  I hope he can come back, but we shall see...I want to see The Domesticated Hound versus The Undead Mountain fight...should be very, very good...

They could basically use ANY really big stuntman or actor for the fight... even in the books Gregor is clad completely in armor and you see nothing but his helmet. I can't remember any scenes in ASOS wheri it would be necessary to actually SHOW Gregor's face, we mostly learn about him through what the other character say.

At the very end, when Oberyn gets him to confess in front of everybody, I believe he actually opens up his visor to announce it.  But, I'd need to re-read.

In the show Tywin's instructed Clegane to burn and pillage, but it was brief. You have to know the books to really keep pace with all the shows minuscule references.
