Welcome to the 37th Annual Jessica Fletcher Amateur Detective Convention” read the banner across the front porch of the old mansion. You have been looking forward to the long weekend of parlor mystery games. You check in and get assigned to a shared room.

Set up:

Players are randomly assigned to rooms, 1-(10?), 2 players to a room. (requires an even number of players to start—16-20)

At the start of each day, you will be provided a puzzle/mystery. The first person to solve this puzzle(by PMing the mods the correct answer) gets to search a room during the night phase, as long as that room is not guarded.

When a body is discovered, everyone searches the body and the area around it, and all this information is public knowledge.

Day and night phases will operate pretty much as in regular mafia. There will be a soft coroner finder, as in once the person is found guilty (voted/lynched) they will be searched for any evidence that they might be killers. Example: James was lynched, in his left sock you find a knife with traces of blood on it (guilty---a killing killer who kills) or Hidden in the inside pocket of his jacket you find a love letter and an invitation to come to this convention to finally meet in person (not guilty---lured there by the killer?)

Special/modified roles:
The Ballsy Amateur Detective (BAD): You are smarter and quicker than the rest of those so called detectives, so at night you will sneak out and search a room. (Don’t forget there are 2 people to a room and anything found in there could belong to either person, even if one person is dead or lynched) Role is assigned on a daily basis, based on solving the daily mystery. Anyone, even someone with another role may become a Ballsy Amateur Detective.

The guard/martyr: Every once in a while you get up the courage to guard someone’s room at night. This stops anyone in the room from leaving and stops anyone one from coming in. But be wary, killers disappointed at being denied their intended target may take their frustrations out on you. You are not aligned with the killers.

Killers: Each night you try to kill these wanna be detectives. You are smarter than all of them and they will never figure it is you behind it all. You and your partner(s) my communicate with each other at all times. If any member of the killers team submitted a correct response to the mystery (even if you were not the first) you may dispose of/arrange the body of your victim any way you choose. (but not add incriminating evidence)

The killers win when everyone not aligned with them is dead.

If everyone aligned with the killers is eliminated from the game, the innocents win.

PLEASE READ THE RULES, AS THEY HAVE BEEN MODIFIED FROM THE PREVIOUS ENTRY

Please note that the "standard" rules have been rewritten in several places.  See the next post.  We encourage you to carefully read them. Since nobody is going to actually read them, This is a quick summary of the more important changes:

(1) This game uses soft alt rules.  See the rules below for more details. Basically, don't out or speculate about anyone's identity in public, and don't try to leave clues about your own identity in any way. It is however acceptable to acknowledge if you think you've guessed someone.

(2) Failing to post for 24 hours will not always lead to an automatic mod-kill.  Rather, a player who fails to post for 24 hours during a day phase will merely lose their vote for the rest of the day.  The vote requirements will be adjusted accordingly.  However, a player who has lost their vote for this reason can still post and should try to do so.   If they do, they will be able to vote as normal during the next day phase (if they are alive, of course...).  During the night, anybody who has not posted for 24 hours will be automatically mod-killed as usual.  See the rules or the discussion here for more details.

(3) Provisional PMs remain in place.

(4) Nights will last for  twelve hours, but may be shorter depending on whether or not all actions are received before that time.

(5) After everyone has signed up and the roles have been sent out, you will be asked to confirm your role and factional alignment by PM before the game begins.

RULES

All players must ..

Spoiler

Players must not ...

Spoiler

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spoiler thread on the discussion board. Anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. Please not that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so.

This game will be played using 'game alts'. Since there hasn't been a game around lately, we're going to be using a softer version of the alt rules normally in effect. The modified "Soft" Alt rule set follows:

Quote

One purpose of the game alts is to enable players to attempt to disguise their identity. According to the alt rules for this game, you may not:

C1) Post on the game thread with any account other than their game alt. Any posts accidentally made "out of alt" should be edited blank as soon as possible.

C2) Post with your game alt outside the game thread. Any posts accidentally made with the game alt outside of the thread should be edited blank as soon as possible.

C3) Give anybody but the game mods access to their game alt for any reason. Players must not change their password from the one assigned to them by the game mods, unless instructed to do so by the game mods.

C4) Reveal the identity of another player in game or attempt to publicly speculate about a player's identity.

C5) Make references or talk in game about things that narrow your identity down (including, but not limited to, other threads where you often post, sing-up dates, your line of work, previous roles you've had, etc.)

C6) The usual exception to the alt rules apply for players who are allowed to communicate with each other off-thread.  If you are able to so communicate with another player, you are both free to reveal your identities to each other and to speculate with each other about the identities of other players (as long as you do so off-thread, of course).

You may, however:

C7) Acknowledge if you believe you have correctly guessed someone's identity, as long as you do not reveal it or provide clues to who you think they are.

C8) Loosely talk about your your past mafia experience, for as long as you do not make reference to how how many games or which specific games you have played, and whether or not you have had certain roles. If you have doubts to what you can say in these terms, run it with the mods via PM. We'll give you the heads up.

C9) Vaguely talk about your time availability (I'm going to sleep, going to work, etc. is normally frowned upon, but I'll tolerate it in this game.)

C10) Alt rules will be enforced by anything we feel like, including sarcastic warnings on thread, angry PMs,  modkilling, whinging posts in the spoiler thread, forced-reveals of the offenders own identity, replacement, loss of role abilities, or whatever else we find appropriate.

Once given access to the thread, spoiled spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not ...

Spoiler

Spectators (of any sort) who ignore these rules are likely to have their access to the spoiler thread revoked and/or to be reported to the metamods.

Game Mechanics

1 - General Structure
Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started on the thread. The game begins during the day. The day ends when when a sufficient number of people have voted to lynch a player (remove that player from the game) or voted to end the day without a lynch. Many games also have time limits on the days, and if no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, night begins. The mods will then post a scene reporting the outcome of the day. Players may continue posting in the thread but no voting is allowed. Night ends when the mods post the morning scene reporting the outcome of the night actions. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase
During the day, players may post in the thread and vote. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day. See later posts for a list of roles.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics
To vote for a player: bold that player's name.
To vote to end the day without a lynch: bold the word night.
To change your vote: bold the other player's name (or bold night).
To remove your vote without casting a new vote: bold the phrase remove vote.

2.2 - Voting Restrictions
You may only vote during the day phase. You can only have one vote outstanding at any time. You may not vote for yourself. You may not edit a vote into a post. You may not edit a vote out of a post.

2.3 - Bold Restrictions
The use of bold should be limited to voting. If you want to emphasize a players name or another word, you can underline the word or post using a different color

2.4 - Majority Defined
A majority means either more than half of the active players voting for one player's lynch or half or more of the active players voting to go to night without a lynch.

2.5 - Ending the Day
The day ends as soon as a majority is reached (or, if the game has a day time limit and the players fail to achieve a majority, once the time limit has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer an active player and must not post in the thread. Votes can no longer be withdrawn and new votes cannot be cast until the night phase ends.

2.6 - Evening Scene
The mods will post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions. If the day ended with a player's lynch, the mods might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player’s alt or alignment. This is the mods’ choice, and they’ll explain what, if any, information will be revealed in the game rules. There are no hidden clues in the evening scenes.

3 - Night Phase

During the night, players may post in the thread but may not vote. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. Once again, the mods decide which roles will be included for their game, so be sure to fully read the game rules and any role descriptions which may be included.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action
If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear to the roled players, and, usually, to all other players as well. If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. Most games have a time limit on nights. All players must PM their night actions to the mods within this timeframe. Players are strongly encouraged to send their night actions as soon as possible. You may also send in a PM for your special action during the day phase.

3.2 - Contingent PM
If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods.

3.3 - Provisional PM
You may choose to send a provisional PM if you want to further consider your night action but do not want to extend the night if all other roled players have decided upon their actions. Provisional PMs must be clearly marked as such. A provisional PM will not be acted upon by the mods until it becomes a 'definite PM.' A provisional PM becomes definite as soon as ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM, ( b ) all other roled players that need to send night actions have done so, or ( c ) the time limit for the night has expired.

As a courtesy to other players we ask that you confirm your provisional PM as soon as you are able.

3.4 - Last Resort PM
In extraordinary circumstances you may be allowed to send in a last resort PM. A last resort PM will not be acted upon by the mods until ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM or ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired. Should you need to send a last resort PM, you must first seek the mods approval by explaining the circumstances that necessitate such a PM. Last resort PMs are accepted only at the discretion of the mods.

3.5 - Failure to PM
If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods or may risk further penalties.

3.6 - Changing a Night Action
PMs to the mod can be changed at any point before the new day is announced. A PM is considered to be changed only after the mod receives and has read the PM. The player bears the risk that the mod will post the morning scene after the player has sent in a new PM but before the mod has actually read it.

3.7 - Abusing the Time Limit
If the mods have included a night time limit, it begins as soon as the previous day ended, regardless of when the mods posted the evening scene. However, this time limit is a maximum limit, and all players should send in PMs as soon as they feel comfortable doing so. Players (and mods) prefer shorter nights, as people are anxious to see who may have died and to begin voting again. If the mods feel that a player is abusing the time limit by unreasonably stalling, they may force the player to take no night action or take other appropriate action.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions
Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect.

3.9 - Morning Scene
The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene shortly after all night action PMs have been received. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night, and might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player’s alt or alignment. There are no hidden clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who have been killed at night will no longer be active players and can no longer post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

Section 4 - Endgame
The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions
The game ends once one faction has reached its winning conditions, which the mods will state in a later post.

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are active players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene
The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are an active player.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early
The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers
When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spoiled spectator threads on the discussion board.

Some Clarifications:

The 3 roles listed above will be in the game;  all other standard roles and the Bungling Do-gooder are possible .

Bungling do gooder (healer): You try to help where you can, and you think you can protect someone from harm.

**********************************************************************************************************

If the BAD finds any 'implements of killing' in a room (poison, knives, rope, piano wire, gun, whatever), then one of the people in the room is a killing killer who kills.  If the BAD does not find any 'killing implements' then that does not mean that everyone in the room is not a killer.

There is a SOFT CF, that basically is the same as listed above for the BAD.

No other roles will have "special" items that would identify them.

No one who is innocent would be caught with a killing tool.

This is the Sample Roleless Innocent (RI) Role PM. This PM is a sample and the evidence here provided (in italics, for example clarity) is guaranteed to not be in the game.

ROLELESS INNOCENT (RI)

Quote

You have been invited to the 37th annual Jessica Fletcher Convention where new members of the Mystery Hall of Fame will be inducted.  You are great at solving mysteries and a candidate for induction.  Unfortunately, solving mysteries is your only skill. (roleless innocent)

After checking in last evening and getting a good night’s sleep (even though your roommate snores) you are looking forward to the breakfast and getting started with today’s mystery and other events.

You help yourself to the breakfast buffet and eat more than your share (hey, it’s free, right).  You finish and are waiting for the activities to start and starting to wonder what the delay is.

It’s been almost an hour since you finished eating when Lany Targagyen comes out.  “Attention! Has anyone seen Whiskeyjack Greyjoy?  He’s our MC and seems to be missing.  He has the mysteries and the schedule of events.”  Just then Piper and Zar came running out the kitchen and hand Lany a large envelope and whisper something you can’t hear.  Lany looks in the envelope and then follows them into the kitchen.

Curious as to what is going on, you follow into the kitchen too.  Lany looks in the panty and Zar out on the back porch and Piper opens the walk in freezer and lets out a scream.  Inside, there is Whiskeyjack dead and frozen on the floor. Lany turns to the crowd behind her, in shock at the loss of her friend, tears in her eyes.  Whiskeyjack was the first person inducted into the Mystery Hall of Fame and the brains behind this weekend.

“I’m, I’m sorry. I guess we should cancel the convention.”

“Why?” someone yelled. “looks like we have a real mystery to solve now.”

Zar thinks for a minute. “We can vote on who we think is guilty and turn them over to the police after we search them.  We can use WJ’s mysteries to allow someone to search rooms”. Lany looks incredulous, but Piper speaks up “Since the doors were locked, we know someone here was the killer, so I agree with Zar.  The three of us are above suspicion, so we will monitor the progress and keep track of everything.”

Lowering her head, Lany reluctantly agrees.  She wipes the tears from her eyes, clears her throat and pulls a paper from the envelope she is still clutching.

“This is today’s mystery:

Quote

Martell had recently joined the Lannisport police force, and on the first day of her job, she was sent out to investigate a new homicide case. The murder involved a wealthy bachelor, Ambrose, who lived in an expensive, grand oceanside mansion. At the time of the murder, there had been five other people in the house: the cook, the maid, two friends, and his niece. Both the cook and maid had rooms in the mansion, and the three guests had all stayed overnight.

When Martell got to the mansion, the five suspects had all been lined up in front of a large bay window. It was mid-afternoon, and through the window, Martell could see the beautiful sunset.

Her partner, Lieutenant Norrey, who had arrived an hour earlier, sketched out the details for Martell. All the suspects had agreed that Ambrose had been found murdered in the morning, shortly before six-thirty A.M, but he had been alive a few minutes past midnight, when they all headed to bed. Nobody had heard anything during the night. Drox, the niece, had come down to the kitchen to get a glass of water, and on her way back upstairs, had passed the bay window, where she saw her uncle's dead body.

Martell decides to begin interrogating the suspects as the lieutenant and two other officers go off to look for more evidence and clues. The suspects give the following testimonies:

Maid: "I retired to my room shortly past eleven last night, after cleaning the dining room where Mr. Ambrose dined with his guests, and helped the cook put away the leftover food. I was reading a novel until about twelve-twenty, and heard occasional laughter and talk, although I couldn't make out the words. This morning, I heard a scream, which was from Drox, so I rushed down with the cook and his two friends. Mr. Ambrose was laying dead in front of that window. The lieutenant moved his body about fifteen minutes before you arrived, but there was blood on the side of the head, from a gunshot, maybe. I didn't hear anything, but whoever did it could have used a muffler. I'm innocent, though."

Cook: "It's like the maid says. She was cleaning the dining room while I tidied up the kitchen, and we both stored the leftovers in the refrigerator and talked for a few minutes about his guests. I went upstairs and to my room about the same time she did, but fell asleep after I took a shower and brushed my teeth. That was about eleven-thirty maybe, and I slept soundly until this morning, when a scream woke me. I rushed downstairs with the others, and there was the body. I tell you, I didn't do it. I've been with Mr. Ambrose for eight years, and he knows he can trust me."

Drox: "I was up until midnight with my uncle and his friends, talking and joking around. I fell asleep at about one-fifteen, but woke at six-twenty-four, and was thirsty, so I went down to the kitchen to get a glass of water. On the way back, I passed by the bay window, the one behind us, and I could see the beautiful sunrise outside, but, sadly, my uncle was sprawled on the ground, with a huge bloody wound on the side of his head. I screamed and the others were here in just one or two minutes."

"That's enough," Martell said abruptly, before the two friends of Mr. Ambrose can say anything. "I know who did it. Lieutenant! We have our murderer!"

All five suspects, and the lieutenant and her two men, who came into the room at her call, look at Martell.

Who murdered Ambrose, and how did Martell know?

Send me a PM with the answer.”

GO!

Mallister, give me some privacy!

All right, we all massclaim if we have items on us and what they are.  There's almost no downside to doing it (beyond one unlikely situation) and several potential upsides to it.  Anyone object?

Mods, that riddle is almost impossible to read.

Also, if someone wants to claim miller (e.g., they have a killing implement on them, but are innocent), they should do it now, before everyone checks in.  I won't believe anyone caught with a knife/gun on Day 2 who says, "It must have been planted on me!"
