It's stated that when Strong Belwas and his "squire" show up with three ships to escort Dany to Pentos, it was Illyrio Mopatis that sent them. What I can't seem to figure out is how Ser Barristan knew to go to Illyrio Mopatis in the first place, and whether or not Varys had anything to do with it. I can't seem to find anything that would answer these questions. Thanks, and apologies if this has been settled in another thread. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Well all barriston says in dance is that after he escaped kings landing he went back in to find a way to pay for passage across the narrow sea to find Viserys...

He doesnt say how he wound up what illriyo though...

I would have to think Varys was involved

He comes into contact with Illyrio after coming to the free cities. Illyrio was at the time looking for people to find Daenerys for him.

Varys probably met him as he was able to know Shae coming through the gate and who she was, and it would be easier for Barristan, and Varys had him spirited to Illyrio's place.

It's probably just a minor detail. Chances are Ser Barristan arrived in Pentos and heard that the Beggar King had been spotted at Magister Illyrio's manse. I was just curious if Ser Barristan's reasoning for going to Illyrio was ever explicitly stated in the text.

Yeah, that's probably the most reasonable explanation for it. Thanks. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I wouldn't be surprised if Varys had something to do with it. I would, however, be surprised if Ser Barristan was willing to trust Varys. Maybe he figured he had no choice.

Remember that as LC of the KG, Barristan was privy to the sessions of the Small Council. He was probably also attending when Varys gave spy records on Jorah, when Varys also indicated that the man in the middle was Illyrio. I think he even says so in the session on the assassination that we see in the books.

Exactly. Jorah's reports couldn't have been going directly to Varys without some transportation help, which is where Illyrio comes in.

Exactly, all he had to do was go across the Narrow Sea and find llyrio or simply talk to Varys about finding him.

Varys would not tell the small council that Ilirio was connected to him.
Either Barristan was guided to Illyrio thru Varys or Varys told Illyrio that Barristan was coming and told him to recruit the man.

Barristan is a simple man, excellent with a sword, but otherwise not much going on. I imagine it would the easiest move Vary's ever made, putting Barristan exactly where he wanted him.

Well Varys would have reported to the Small council about the where abouts of the Beggar King and Baristan probably went there because of that information.

IIRC, Cersei says it was Varys who suggested to dismiss Barristan from the Kingsguard. Is it possible that he was already planning to have Barristan in Essos with Dany, and that removing him from the Kingsguard was the first step?

Everyone knew full well that Illyrio was hosting Viserys and Dany in his manse in Pentos. Barristan was on the small council when this very thing was discussed numerous times, so once he decided to seek for Dany in Essos, Illyrio as her last known guardian is the obvious starting place.

It was Varys' suggestion that Barristan would be removed from the KG, so he definitly wanted to use him for something.

Dany's location was unknown at that point, and over time, Varys and Illyrio must have started to wonder why Jorah had stopped sending messages (they were in the Red Waste).

Barristan probably heard about Illyrio during the Small Council meetings, where Viserys and Daenarys were discussed more often. So that explains why he went to Pentos, and how he ended up with Illyrio. Varys had nothing to do with that, because in aDwD and aSoS, Barristan makes it clear that he doesn't trust Varys. As far as Barristan is concerned, Varys is working against Dany, looking for people to kill her. So Varys did not contact Barristan. Varys might not have wanted him to go to Essos in the first place. What better way to create more chaos than have one of the most honourable Knights in the entire kingdom joins one of the Kings that isn't in controle of the Iron Throne, in the middle of the wars?

Once Barristan showed up in Pentos though, Illyrio put him to use. Barristan probably stayed there for a while, since Dany spend so much time in the Red Waste, and Jorah was only able to send a message from Qarth. Since it takes a ship (during a direct voyage) about 37 days to get from Pentos to Qarth, and Jorah's message must have taking just as long to reach Pentos at the very least, perhaps even longer, because ships that are not your own tend to make a few stops on the way to make money. So Dany must have been in Qarth at least two and a half months before Barristan arrived there. He simply had to sit and wait in Pentos until news of Dany's location reached them.

he would of recognized jon con finding some one alive 10 years after there supposed to be dead...... raises questions.  Aegon is the biggest egg in Ill's basket he wouldn't risk that.

Barristan has served the king for 15 years.  Illyrio couldn't trust  him with information containing to aegon. at that moment just to risky

Why does Barristan tell Dany he wanted to find and serve his true KING?
