So apparently this bill is coming back around again.

There are some courageous people who are out in Uganda fighting this, and protests in the UK and Paris.

According to this article on Huff Po, various myths about homosexuality fuel the problem.

In addition to gay kids killing themselves around the West, this is the reason I feel its important to point out the fantasy battles against the "darkness" and "sin" that too many faiths use as a way to push bigotry.

(Yes, even honest conviction is still bigotry in my book when you make claims about other people without evidence.)

I have no idea if  petitions help, but here's one below:

Quote

When the bill was last introduced, human rights and LGBT rights groups were horrified, and many governments condemned it.  Pressure from around the globe led to its never being voted on.  We need to put that pressure on again NOW.
  • Let Uganda’s parliament and the world know you join with the millions who condemn this bill by tweeting about it today.
  • Then sign a petition urging Uganda’s President to veto the bill if it passes.
Activists on the ground recommend we keep it civil so our message is heard  - here’s a sample tweet:  Prime Minister @AmamaMbabazi will you speak out against Uganda’s dangerous Anti-Homosexuality Bill today? Lives depend on it! #stopthehate

I'm pretty sure I do oppose this, but could you post an objective account of what it is?

The wikipedia page. There seem to be reports that there's now only jail time for "homosexual acts" rather than a death penalty.

This article is useful for a concise summary of countries around the world that punish homesexual activity, including Uganda (see table halfway down).

Ignorant bigotry dressed up as faith is still ignorant bigotry.

You're pretty sure you oppose it -- as in you think that in some instances the death penalty, or any lesser form of discrimination against LGBT individuals are ok?

And what the hell about the sources in the OP were biased/potentially fact-bending?

I gotta admit, I was wondering this myself.

How the fuck can you be pretty sure that you oppose the death penalty for homosexuality? The fuck?

You are pretty sure that you oppose a bill that is titled the Anti-Homosexuality Bill? I'm not sure how you can be pretty sure that you are opposed to legal protection under the law. How can you be pretty sure that you oppose a bill that is contrary to Uganada's own constitution? You're pretty sure that you oppose executing people for people gay? The fuck? The fuck?

I didn't read that as him trying to be funny.

I did, however, read it as the "this" referring to the specific bill, not the concept of the death penalty, and wanting to be reassured by a source he thinks is credible that the bill does indeed include such language before he completely commits to being opposed to it.

I don't support the death penalty in any form, like I said something called the "kill the gays bill" even by its enemies is unlikely to get my support. Having read up on it, it seems the death penalty is for pederasty, rape, and having gay sex when infected with aids, so the name of the bill is a bit hyperbolic but still I'm not in favour of any legal sanction against people who engage in gay sex.

Ignorance is bliss to some... And why am I not surprised that Pastors are involved in this anti-gay movement?

I remember there was concern that a subset of American evangelicals were also spurring on homophobia, as well as the original Kill the Gays Bill in Uganda. Given the "corrupt the blood donor supply with AIDS" myth a subset spread in the US, it wouldn't surprise me.

And then there are the questions of Chik-Fil-A's involvement...

It's the bullshit like this that makes me sometimes wish there really was a Jesus and hell, just so when these fuckstains die they can go stand before him thinking themselves all righteous and holy and then he can slap that smug, self-righteous smile off their wrinkled old faces before telling them to get right the fuck out of his place because people that lie and cause other people to get killed for it for sure have no fucking place in the kingdom of heaven.

Well, I'm squarely against eternal damnation for anyone, but the look of surprise on some faces would bring amusement.

Also, here's an article on American involvement. It disgusts me to think these people, upon losing the culture war here, take that shit abroad. One of the worst examples was NOM, which wanted Starbucks in more homophobic countries to be targeted.

Normally I am as well, but I'd be willing to make some exceptions.

I've signed every petition against this I could find. I really hope it doesn't happen since that would just be horrible.
