Yes, let's let the kids and plenty of other folk who may not have any truck with this starve because the opinion-formers and lawmakers (and probably the people who are least likely to be hit by such a thing) is wrong. That's definitely going to win people over to the cause.

More like lets stop paying for gold plated AK47s and fleets of Mercedes for the select few.

Are you very sure that this is where all the money goes? Are you very, very sure? Or are you just appealing to a stereotype?

Re: Ormond
You have a more lenient view of social conservatives, then, because I'm thinking of Republican smear tactics, including faxing flyers claiming their opponents are gay, during elections. I wonder if that sort of stuff is not effective then why do election staff from the GOP use it?

Those things haven't always been effective, and, come on, there is a great deal of difference between believing "someone who is gay is not worthy to hold elective office" and believing "people who are gay should be killed or given long prison terms."

Ormond- there is a difference between supporting asylum for an individual/specific situation and supporting it for a group in general, which would likely be more a matter of policy/voting, and which also means that opponents/Fundies can target him/her as a supporter of "the gays" rather than someome who helped a gay PERSON. It is much easier to dehumanize a group- one death is a tragedy, a million deaths are a statistic, and all that.

Perhaps, but that's only relevant IF anyone has proposed that Congress vote on this issue -- and frankly I don't think Congress should be involved here. Determination of who is in danger of persecution and worthy of asylum should be made on a case by case basis by the State Department and Congress should not meddle in the details of this process, in my opinion. It shouldn't be their job to rule on this at all.

You pointed out that you found it "hard to believe that a congressperson who publically supported granting asylum to this man would be "committing political suicide""; my point is that support for that one case might not be, but supporting asylum for Ugandan gays as a whole might well be political suicide. Which I think is more relevant.ETA: I do agree that congress shouldn't and wouldn't be directly involved with this sort of thing, but there is more to being a Congressperson than straight up voting. I could see someone take fundie criticism for speaking up in support of asylum- or even for not speaking out against it, potentially.

Not a big surprise.  There are a number of major religions, including Christianity, whose holy books contain anti-homosexual content.  None of these religions has ever repudiated such content.

Uganda’s Seventh Day Adventist President Wants To Kill Gay People

Quote

The Seventh -day Adventist (S.D.A) church has commended President Yoweri Museveni and Rebecca Kadaga, the speaker of parliament for their strong stand against homosexuality and corruption in the country.
Pastor Blasious Ruguri, the Seventh-day Adventist church president in East and Central Africa, said the church supports the government in the fight against homosexuality and corruption.

“Our stand is “zero tolerance” to this vice and to western influence on this crucial issue because God says no to it.  We are together with the President and the Speaker and we fully support the Anti-Homosexuality Bill. I call upon all religious ministers, all Ugandans, and all Africans to say no to Homosexuality. Let us stand for our sovereignty as Ugandans and as God fearing people even the heavens fall.”

Southern Baptist Minister Encourages Uganda’s ‘Kill The Gays’ Bill

Quote

Though the Ugandan Parliament has adjourned until February, discussion continues about the infamous “Kill The Gays” Anti-Homosexuality bill. Its latest endorsers is Pastor David Dykes of the Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas, who traveled to Uganda to express his dismay that the U.S. State Department is pressuring Uganda to “recognize homosexual behavior.” Jeff Sharlett notes that Dykes has prayed before Congress before, as Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) has held leadership positions in Green Acres. Watch Dykes’ proud endorsement of the “Kill The Gays” bill (via Box Turtle Bulletin)

Holy books contain lots of evil stuff that were never repudiated, e.g. Jesus never explicitly condemned slavery and Paul even told slaves to obey their masters. That doesn't mean that Jesus and Paul wouldn't be cunts if they still believe/condone that shit now.

God Loves Uganda preview on All Out

Quote

"Masterfully crafted and astonishingly provocative, GOD LOVES UGANDA may be the most terrifying film of the year" - David Courier, Sundance Film Festival

While the infamous "Kill the Gays" Bill gathers domestic support, and garners international condemnation, tension in Uganda mounts and an electric atmosphere takes hold. The film reveals the conflicting motives of faith and greed, ecstasy and egotism, among Ugandan ministers, American evangelical leaders and the foot soldiers of a theology that sees Uganda as a test case, ground zero in a battle not for millions, but billions of souls.

The feature length documentary, directed by Oscar-winner Roger Ross Williams, is a powerful exploration of the evangelical campaign to change African culture with values imported from America’s Christian Right.

Granted, but one should never underestimate the power of spin. Sure, a conservative congressmen might define his own vote merely as saving a man from the headsman's ax, but that does not mean his next primary opponent will present it that way to his constituency. She'll likely distort the vote into a generally pro-gay-rights stance, and because there's a kernel of truth there the spin will be difficult for him to deny...particularly to voters who aren't paying very close attention. Or to those voters who just don't like gay people, of which there are a goodly number.
