Is that relevant?

I just think it's a bit silly to worry about keeping Christ in Christmas when it's pretty much known it's a fake birthday. That said, I just say whatever comes to mind - Sometimes it's "Merry Christmas" and sometimes it's "Happy Holidays".

Is this really that big a deal?
I use "Happy Holidays" online because you're never sure who's on the other side of the screen. In real life, all my friends get a personal phone call wishing them a merry #insert holiday name#.

I say happy holidays because I have friends who are Jewish, Indian, or atheist.

Edit: aka I'm lazy and I don't always know when Diwali, Kwanzaa, Yule, etc. are happening.

As a native English speaker, do you hear the "Christ" in "Christmas"?

In Spanish it doesn't matter because "Navidad" comes from Latin, meaning birth, and "Navidad" doesn't sound that much like the word "birth" in Spanish. Besides we have said it so many times it has lost its meaning

Minaku - I think you mean Hindus, not Indians. I admittedly thought Indian == Hindu for much of my life as well. :-)

I tend to say Merry Christmas since that's what I celebrate but if someone told me they celebrated another holiday I'd say Happy (insert holiday here). I think the best option is saying happy holidays if you don't know what holiday someone celebrates and happy (insert holiday here) if you do.

"Happy Holidays," because it's inclusive of others who might not be Christian (e.g. Jews, etc.) and is the polite thing to do.

Precisely.

It's more than just Hindus, as Malt pointed out, so... Indians.

Edit: Jains also celebrate Diwali.

If I know someone's christian I'll say Merry Christmas, otherwise I stick to Happy Holidays.  I don't remotely care if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, its not like I go around wearing a massive Star of David necklace (anymore), so how would they know I'm Jewish?  Its the sentiment they're trying to convey that's important.

Yet there are ~25 million Indian Christians in India alone, and lots of Indian Christians among the Indian Diaspora. So more Indian Christians than there are Christians in a large number of "Christian" countries. It's not really a good idea to generalise when there are over 1 billion people covered by that generalisation.

So I say happy holidays, and that applies to whatever holiday the person celebrates.
