I heard somebody I respect say that his workplace was sexist because traditional male values are frowned upon.
Could anybody help me out by translating that for me? Either by suggesting what these 'male values' might be, or if you or someone you knew said something like this, what they might typically be objecting to?

Sounds like they are secretly mad at themselves for their innability to evolve and adjust in the modern work enviroment.

Sopheila, the person who made that comment was most likely referring to opinions like these:

I've sat through enough freaking conferences to recite this crap in my sleep--women are team-oriented; men are more likely to befriend superiors, blah, blah, blah. As you can probably discern, I am just not certain the differences cited still exist.

likely a few obnoxious camille paglia quotations should zip this thread up nicely:
Quote
Gay men are guardians of the masculine impulse. To have anonymous sex in a dark alleyway is to pay homage to the dream of male freedom. The unknown stranger is a wandering pagan god. The altar, as in pre-history, is anywhere you kneel.
Quote
Teenage boys, goaded by their surging hormones run in packs like the primal horde. They have only a brief season of exhilarating liberty between control by their mothers and control by their wives
Quote
Straight men who visit prostitutes are valiantly striving to keep sex free from emotion, duty, family--in other words, from society, religion, and procreative Mother Nature.
Quote
The male orientation of classical Athens was inseparable from its genius. Athens became great not despite but because of its misogyny

Perhaps it's when they order food. A man knows what he wants for lunch before even being presented with a menu. 15 seconds of searching for a compatible dish is all he needs. Excepting when he is ordering in an unfamiliar language. Then he scans the menu thoughtfully, orders something, and when they bring out an eggplant and ostrich salad, he grins confidently as if that was exactly what he wanted and devours it without complaint.
