This is a theory that I have been thinking about. It might be stupid, but still.

Is there a curse on the people from the North when they go South? In most cases, when someone from the North has gone South they have ended up dead, captive etc.
  • Ned - Dead
  • Cat - Dead
  • Robb - Dead
  • Brandon - Dead
  • Rickard - Dead
  • Ser Rodrick - Dead (went South, but came back to the North and died)
  • Lyanna - Dead
  • Jory - Dead
  • Hullen - Dead
  • Vayon Poole - Dead
  • Greatjon - captive
  • Northerners at the RW - Dead/Captive
Also, in the case of Arya and Sansa both of them have, in sense died, as they have abandoned the name 'Stark' and taken up other names instead.

I think defianlty for the Starks, however it is not so much a curse, just that they are first men, men of ice and winter and the old gods, they don't fit in down south and don't belong their which is why going south always F***s them up. it is also worth mentioning that Rodrik died in the nirth

I believe jealousy which triggers disdain plays a role into the disdain and unfortunate circumstances Northerners face when they venture South as well. Northerns seem more content than Southerners even with their beautiful weather and wealth.

Well they worship the new gods, so I would describe them as southerners.

Didn't the First Men occupy the breadth and width of Westeros before the Andal invasion?  Those south of the North assimilated into Andal culture more wholly, and even those in the North who live south of the Wall speak the same language as those in the south, not the language of the First Men.

But anyways - I don't think there's a curse.

1. The Tullys are Southerners all the way.
2. You have mentioned all of the Northerners who have gone South and died, but not the presumably thousands of Northerners over the centuries who have ventured South without dying. This is probably because uneventful Southern trips did not warrant stories.
3. You have not mentioned all of the Starks who managed to get themselves killed while staying in the North. And there were quite a few.
4. Of the 12 deaths you mentioned, 8 occurred in 2 vast wars which just happened to be fought primarily in the South. And Ned survived the first one just fine.

I do not believe in a curse. But it's possible the Starks believe there is a curse.

Well, there's also a case to be made that it was mainly...''less smart'' northmen that suffered that fate. Arya, Sansa, Roose, Howland didn't die. Barbrey, Wyman, Mors have yet to be placed in that situation. How many Westermen manage to return from the East?

I wouldn't say that it's curse per se but going South definitely doesn't bode well for Starks, at least. They belong in the North.

Those people are just connected to the Starks. Ned was a brain dead leader as were his siblings, his wife is equally brain dead. They produced brain dead children. The only Stark who has a brain for politics was Rickard Stark and he died retrieving his moronic son.

In other words if you have a horrible captain of your ship and he sinks it, you are going down with him.

Well that's harsh, I wouldn't categorize Ned as a brain dead leader. He was involved in a game that no one gave him the rule book to or even bothered informing was being played. I can't fault the Starks for having some notion no matter how distorted of morals.

They are in bed with simpletons who just lost their matriarch in Tywin Lannister. Not to mentioned their position in the North has been compromised by said alliance because Tywin paid their loyalty with false coin. That Bastard Bolton has no claim to Winterfell after all, they need to thank Tywin for that. In truth I doubt that he would have given them the real Arya if he had her, the Lannisters were only interested in establishing their claim. Not the Boltons.

He sure wouldn't have! Probably Lancel would have married her.

I've been under the impression that the Boltons know it's not actually Arya, I'm right, right?

It has nothing to do with ice or fire or summer or winter or Andals or first men. Thematically that's nice but they were simply stupid and thus were outplayed.
