In fact, it could be argued that Going South is not the Starks' problem. Their problem appears to be Going South and trying to start shit. I'm sure if the North received a steady supply of militant Dornishmen and Stormlanders, then the situation would be reversed.

Those people are just connected to the Starks. Ned was a brain dead leader as were his siblings, his wife is equally brain dead. They produced brain dead children. The only Stark who has a brain for politics was Rickard Stark and he died retrieving his moronic son.
In other words if you have a horrible captain of your ship and he sinks it, you are going down with him.

I think you are a bit harsh on Catelyn but otherwise its not far from the truth.

- Ned basically killed himself.
- Robb & Catelyn were killed by Tywin by proxy. Rough, ruthless and disgusting, the lion paw, the Tywin way. Impossible to anticipate the RW but not surpising in the end, the outcome is pretty predictable if you loose against him, and against Tywin, you can loose in many ways. Also, Robb's hormones didn't helped.
- Brandon get himself killed too. Too rough while his little brother died for being too soft.
- Rickard, blindly executed by the Mad King. No luck, but he also can thanks his elder son and his only daughter for his demise.
- Rodrick Cassel never crossed the Neck so....
- Lyanna, she can look herself in the mirror, yes ma'am.
- Jory mirdered in the street by jaime to send a message on the matter of his brother. Jory's ghost says hi to Cat.
- Hullen & Poole in the crossfire of Cersei's coup and Ned/Sansa stupidity.
- Greatjon, should be lucky to not be dead. See Robb & Cat.
- Bannermen suffering their leader downfall, no luck.
This curse although being a potential great Stark/Northern Kingdom PR, close eyes on the fact that in many ways they have a hand in their deaths (well, you can't fault them for dying in war) or even sometimes borderline suicidal moves.

I dont buy the whole "northerns should stay in the north, they aren't made for the south" thing. The Starks and the north just get screwed over. Ned didnt want to play the game and Robb got betrayed. Its just how it goes
