I guess when they put out a non-Kurt-Cobain Nirvana song, you have to check it out...

Paul McCartney, though, really?

ETA: Congrats to Krist Novacelik for getting back in the public eye, I guess?

This song is weird. It's had a couple of 10-second stretches that have sounded Nirvana-ish, but mostly it's just weird. Also, Paul hasn't sounded particularly good all set; kind of like he has a cold.

They just finished playing it live for the first time at the 12/12/12 benefit concert, so I got nothing, unfortunately.

ETA: I"m sure it'll be all over Youtube in about 90 seconds.

This is all I could find, and its 1. Shitty 2. scrachy 3. Cant really tell who it is, it doesn't sound like McCartney, or much like Nirvana.

Maybe a bit too much marihuana...

Song isn't bad, though. Definitely feels like Nirvana.

I'm not sure exactly which authority I would need to determine whether or not something is an 'official' reunion, but my brain is telling me this is insufficient. Weird, considering all the remaining members are present. But nonetheless, my brain is quite insistent: this isn't Nirvana. It's Paul McCartney with some guys who happen to be from the same band once. The song sounds nothing like them, it's a riff (rare for Nirvana) then a single chord verse (I can't think if a single instance of this in their back catalogue) then a chorus where it's not barre chords (again rare). It's Paul McCartney playing a generically 'rocky' song that doesn't actually resemble Nirvana at all.

That's because Cobain was Nirvana.

Sounds like a reason for Grohl to wail the hell out of some drums again.

His voice and lungs have been shot for a while. It's kind of disheartening see him attempting to belt out Hey Jude nowadays.

Still bringing Nirvana up a level though. >_>

Wow was that Krist Novoselic, RIck Nielsen, or Merlin Olsen playing bass?

That was really bad.  And not a Nirvana reunion.  It was Dave and Krist hooking up because they got a chance to play with McCartney.

And since when was Pat Smear ever a member of Nirvana?

Are you serious? He was a member during the 1993-1994 In Utero tour.

Here is Krist writing on his blog about the concert:

Quote

The collaboration came out of the Sound City film that was produced and directed by Dave. He asked me if I wanted to play with him, Pat and Paul? I said YES! It was a wonderful day—Paul came in with this cigar box guitar and started playing some mean slide on it. He said it was in a ‘D.’ Hearing that, Grunge instincts took over my left hand and I dropped the E on the bass to D. Pat and Dave got into it and the tune took shape. Paul flashed a riff and we picked it up. I busted another one out and everyone picked it up. Things started coming together.

It was so exciting to play with Paul. I became seized with thoughts, for I hadn’t played like that with Pat or Dave since the last Nirvana show in 1994. Wow, it was emotionally and musically heavy! Some other things brought me back; there was a Lefty on guitar who was a heck of a songwriter. Anyway, words can’t really describe it and I returned to the task at hand. A new song was born! And that’s about it. That’s all it is—a new song by some players who have doing it for a while.

I admit, I teared up a little at the lefty comment.

Nirvana is my #1 favorite band of all time.

Since the last link was dead, I thought that I's drop a current one. I missed it, but just caught it tonight on youtube. I love the song.

Is it just me, or does Dave remind anyone else of Animal from the Muppets?

He was a touring member.  And then only because he was a marginally better guitarist than Kurt.

If he didn't write or record with them, then I wouldn't consider him as being "in the band."

I wouldn't go by the standard of writing because Dave, Chad, and Krist didn't get songwriting credits on anything but Scentless Apprentice. I wouldn't go by the standard of recording because Pat recorded Unplugged with them. Kurt wanted him to become a permanent member, and even said during Unplugged, "this is our new guitarist, Pat." Kurt kicked Chad out of Nirvana in 1991, but he's still considered "being in the band" at some point in the band's history by Nirvana fans. The only person who didn't belong there was Macca.

NO NO NO NO NO, There is no Nirvana with out Kurt, its just Dave, Krist, and Paul. I refuse to call this a Nirvana Runinion, its like the Beatles without John, or Areosmith with out Steven,or the Temptations with out Otis.

I once told a friend Keith Moon reminded me of Animal. He looked at me all sober and seriouslike and said "Dude, Animal is based on Moon".

Have you seen the new Muppets movie?  Grohl plays Animool, a member of a competing puppet group called The Moopets.

Since when are tour musician considered band members?  Are studio musicians also considered band members?  Is Eric Clapton a member of the Beatles?
