April was hard for me. I also had a hard time getting into anything. I'm at 29/50.

I have you down for a goal of 40 from earlier in the thread. Are you increasing it to 50?

Read three more this month, so I'm at 13/40.

Tooth and Nail - Craig Dilouie:  Military zombie novel.  Pretty enjoyable and creates a more immersive (not a word?!) experience to use all that military jargon.  Although I think that they were overstating the degree to which military discipline was falling apart in a matter of days.
Turning the Tide - Ed Offley:  How the Battle of the Atlantic was turned decisively against the German U-Boats.  It was interesting to hear the details of the individual convoys, and how in March 1943 things were going so badly but by May 1943 the submarines were essentially neutered as a threat.  But I wasn't impressed with Offley's writing and overall the book was rather dull.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - Jonathan Safron Foer:  Fiction novel of a bright/eccentric kid who is trying to get over his father's death in 9/11.  I wanted to like this novel, but overall the characters frustrated me too much.

Almost finished with The Year of the Flood by Atwood.  Was hoping to get that one done this month, but alas.

I thought it was 50. Since I am already at 30, I may as well increase it.

Four books in april, all rated four stars on goodreads.

Pines - Blake Crouch
The Fort - Bernard Cornwell
Fuzzy nation - Joe Scalzi
The Forever War - Joe Haldeman

That brings the total up to 12/40

I did a bit better this month and got slightly ahead of schedule.

Read:
- The Warrior Prophet & The Thousandfold Thought by R. Scott Bakker.  Continuing my reread, still loving the note-taking feature.  Apparently I took 36 pages of notes for TTT.
- A Dark Dividing, Sarah Rayne.  Not a great book, but some good passages.  The author isn't a bad writer, but this story meandered all over the place.  The "twist" was so unsurprising that I'm not really sure it qualifies as a twist.
- The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey.  Required reading from my office. Corporate BS with a few good bits, as I said before.  I had this in audiobook, and the narrator was bad.
- Gone Girl, Gillian Flynn.  Really good book, one of the best I've read this year.  Loved the twists.  Only gave 4 stars on Goodreads though, but won't go into why for spoiler reasons.
- Consider Phlebas, Iain M. Banks.  Inspired to pick up the first Culture novel after hearing about Mr. Banks' medical issues.  The book was very interesting, and while the setting and plot failed to completely wow me, they were solid.  I picked up another Culture novel after reading this one.

Reading:
- The Judging Eye, R. Scott Bakker
- Player of Games, Iain M. Banks

Up Next:
White Luck Warrior and then maybe starting in on my Erikson reread.  Tyrant's Law comes out this month, and that will shoot up to the top of my list for sure.

So now I'm at 18/52, slightly ahead of schedule, and 3/18 women (though I've no specific goal there).

lol - off topic, but I agree with you about Covey, Wrath.

Don't get me wrong, it's not like there isn't anything useful in there.  But this guy has been idolized and then some pretty much for pointing out that being proactive is a good idea.

I'm doing terribly on my goal so far, but I'm still hopeful I'll start to catch up in the Summer.  I'm in the middle of Gary Taubes' Good Calories, Bad Calories, and it's a bit of a tome.

Finished After Dark a while back, then tried getting started on The Age of Innocence. I didn't have the patience for it, so now I'm reading On the Beach instead. I think I'll increase my goal by five once I've gotten to ten books, but don't want to get ahead of myself.

I'm up to 24/52.

Two books finished this week. Feels like AGES since I last finished something. What a terrible month April was for reading! I feel as if I lost all momentum.

However, I've just got ALL of my books unpacked and on to new bookshelves. That's the first time in three years I've been able to view them all at once and I've 'found' a couple of books I actively want to read. Hopefully this will relight my fire. :)

I'm finally done with Introduction to US Health Policy, that one took me quite a long time to get through. The other day I got my hands on World War Z and I ended up getting through that book in 3-4 days. Tried reading The Hunger games but I couldn't get past the first couple of pages without losing interest, I should have skipped the movie and read the book instead but I'll probably pick it up again later. Now reading A Farewell to Arms. 10/20

I'm at 14/30 now. May is turning out to be less slow than what I had expected, but the books I read this month so far are pretty short, between 200 and 300 pages each: So Many Books, The Prisoner of Heaven and Carrie. Fun fact: I'd be right on track if I had kept my goal of 40 books for this year. I don't know if I'll be able to keep it up, though.
