He's not wearing them all of the time is he?  He should not be wearing them for anything inside of 4 feet, because they will place additional strain on his eyes and increase the risk of them getting worse.

He wears them at school to see the board and stuff. Takes them off  to read.

That's good!  Makes sure he keeps doing so.

Most of my family wears glasses  and I am doubly fucked because on top of the genetics I also have Strabismus because of the Cerebral Palsy I have extreme difficulty with my left eye and I’ve told over the years that contacts are not really an option.

I'm not blind my eyes are getting weaker as I tick closer towards 30 but I've been told the decay is normal

I don't know the exact numbers.  All I know is that with my left eye alone I can only see the big E at the top of the chart and that's it.

I wear glasses only when I'm reading or in class, most people don't know I do until I whip them out, that's how rare I wear them.

At least you can see the chart.  It's a fuzzy white blur for me.

I was -2 in both eyes with 0.75 astigmatism. Been wearing glasses since I was 14 (I'm 27 now). Had PRK laser eye surgery 3 weeks ago. Vison is already pretty close to 20/20 and it usually takes about 3 months before you get the full benefits. Definitely one of the best decisions I ever made.

Approx. -1 on each eye (can't remember exactly).

I bought my glasses ~5y ago, but I only ever wear them on two occasions - when I'm driving on the highway and when I'm in the back of a lecture hall. Not always in the latter case, actually, and I only do it in the former cuz the law requires it.

I don't like any of the eyesight correction methods our civilized societies has to offer:
- glasses are too clingy (both literally and figuratively). You have to wipe the lenses, carry them around, your vision is obscured by the rims ... fuck that
- contacts are even worse. Basically same as glasses, but require even more care and you can't wear them indefinitely (you need to change them at the very least). Only upside is you don't look like a nerd. But on the other hand, you're no different than any person wearing glasses except in that you're trying to hide your inner-nerd.
- laser surgery is expensive, risky and not final - your eyesight can continue to deteriorate.

Since I've gotten my glasses, as far as I can tell (I haven't visited an optician), my eyesight hasn't gotten any worse. When my optician first made them she told me that in my condition she advises to wear them as little as possible and she even tried to put a slightly smaller magnifier than actually required for me to see perfectly - I don't remember her exact explanation, but it was something about how the retina works harder when the eye cannot see perfectly, otherwise it grows lazy and the eyesight continues to deteriorate.

Either she was right or it was books to blame all along - somewhere around the same time I got my glasses I stopped reading books almost completely. I've outsourced them to my ears now.

I have no idea how bad my eye sight. I just know I have astigmatism and have been wearing glasses for longer than I care to remember, which I now have wear all the time. I did try contacts, but I didn't like them. They were just too frustrating to handle.

I developed early (rapid) onset of cataracts in December and within 2 weeks, it was like looking through cotton balls.  Then, one of my lenses dislocated which was hella fun.

The good part is that I had surgery to correct these things and now have seriously awesome, kickass vision.  First time w/o contacts or glasses in 30 years.  One eye is for distance (20/20) and the other eye is for mid-range and up close.  So, I can see now.  Things are bright, clear, sharp, vivid.  And, my insurance will cover all optometry visits now.  No more contacts.  Reading glasses (maybe in another 5-10 years), but other than that, I'm a happy girl.

I totally empathize with folks who have truly crappy vision.  Mine was pretty bad (4.25 correction in my left eye, 3.75 in the right) with serious astigmatism.  It's amazing what lasik and lens replacement can do nowadays.

The surgeries themselves were trippy.  They give you happy drugs to keep your nerves away and you don't really SEE them do anything. No hands coming at you, no tools, no faces.  "Look at the two squares," they said, and I did, and it was like watching some kind of massively cool Pink Floyd laser show.  :)  No pain.  15 minutes and you're done.

They more more options than just lasik, though (and even then, the astigmatism correction they can do is pretty amazing).

My mom used to scold me all the time about ruining my eyes by reading in low light. All the damn time. A few years ago she read that it can cause strain, but no permanent damage and apologized to me. :P

Did she read it in a properly lighted environment? :P
