Eragon--A ripoff?!

Who knew?

I looked in the search engine, and saw that this subject wasn't brought up, so I decided to start this thread.

Whoever read the Inheritence Cycle, or as most people know it, the Eragon series, probably noticed the various ripoffs of the series. Now, what does this has to do with ASOIAF? Well, I'm glad you asked, schizophrenic other side of me! Because it's one of those various works Mr. Christopher Paulini, in my opinion, completely ripped off, along with LOTR.

Please. Arya? An evil, mad, long-fingernailed king who's overthrown in the wake of civil war? DRAGONS? I mean, it practically has a Nazgul-Fell Beasts monster-things in the form of the Ra'zac and the Lethrblaka. Plus, Eragon, Aragorn. Conicidence, yeah.

Did anyone else find this horribly annoying? I might be just ranting but I wanted to put this up for discussion. Not to be a hater, though, I actually liked most parts of the series, and even though many of the smaller plot-lines weren't completely finished, the main storyline was quite satisfactory in my opinion. What do you think?

Eragon is hilarious. I never finished the series. I read the first two and couldn't really be bothered. Mind you, I really enjoyed the first one, so two years ago I re-read it and wow; I ruined a tiny bit of my child hood there.

A lot of authors are inspired by a lot of authors.

Wow. This guy/gal really hates the books. xD

Inspired, yes, but I'd hope for inspiration to come off as a little more subtle. There's a very fine line, IMHO, between ripping someone off and being inspired by him. Names, for instance, are a bit on the rip-off side of things, I think. :P

IMO it's more of a total LOTR rip off.

Same here. The movie was better.

Nonononononono.

The movie was terrible.

I read those books a couple years ago and liked them. In my defense, I was 13 and hadn't read either ASOIAF or LOTR (Actually I still have yet to read LOTR), so at that point they seemed super cool to me. DRAGONS! ELVES! DWARVES!

I've never read the books, and don't plan to, but:

DRAGONS?

Did GRRM invent dragons? Come on now, stick to the stuff he really ripped off. Saying Paolini ripped dragons off from GRRM is like saying Alastair Reynolds ripped spaceships off from Peter F. Hamilton, or that Sylvia Plath ripped crazy people off from Ken Kesey.

I don't think that many of us frequent users of the Lit forum here bothered to read Eragon, hence there was never all that much discussion of it here when the books came out. The ripoff was so blatant there wasn't anything to argue over.
