The Grim Company, by Luke Scull. Just like Abercrombie, but with actual magic.

If you like, I could ask my publisher to send you a retail hardback. Aside from fixing typos and such, I made quite a few signifiant adjustments to the ARC text that make the final text a fair bit stronger. Also, the finished book is stunning (in my no doubt biased opinion).

If there's significant differences, sure.

Oh, it doesn't need to be objective. Disgustingly superlative and fawning would suffice, I should think...

NOnonononono... you don't want *fawning*. People will skip over it like they do five-star reviews on Amazon. You want balanced reviews. You know -- one that gives lovingly detailed praise of the characterization, compares the battles scenes to the best of the best, MAYBE waxes a little teary-eyed over the glorious pacing, clutches its pearls over the cliffhangers, and then makes some pithy but fair comments about, like, the terrible spacing in the gutter margins on page 317. ;-)

Hmm... Out of curiosity, how many ARCs and retails copies get sent to reviewers? Are we talking dozens or hundreds or what?

Depends. On average I now get about 5-10 a month. A couple of years ago I was getting maybe 20, but publishers worked out I was highly unlikely to review anything with a vampire/werewolf/vampiric werewolf/scantily-clad woman standing next to a vampiric werewolf, and as a result my ARC intake dropped by about half :) There's also some publishers that I am on good terms with but not on the ARC list. I have to specifically ask for stuff from them, but very rarely do so.

Wasn't the question concerning the number of specific book copies being sent to different reviewers by a specific publisher? I'd be interested to know that myself - is it usually a few dozens or a couple of hundreds rather?

I think I recall my agent saying the number of proofs ran into the hundreds. I do know that my publisher had a nice big bookcase stuffed full of them when I visited their offices a few months ago. Not all proofs will go to reviewers - I imagine a fair few end up in the hands of booksellers, agents, publishers, etc.

I'd like to get ARCs too, but I can't get my blog to take off...I only attract Russian bots that try to sell me Viagra and fake Gucci handbags :(

Don't use LJ for a public-oriented blog. It's better for private friends networks. My early attempts to use LJ as a blog host never really worked out. Blogger or WordPress are the way to go.

The official SFFWorld review has been posted. The reviewer ultimately liked it and thought it was the best recent epic fantasy debut he'd read, though it appears the sheer grittiness almost bested him in the early stages. Are you grimdark enough to handle it?

In other news, you can pick up the hardcover now from both Waterstones and Amazon. They've both jumped the March 1 release date.

For £1.71 the kindle edition off of amazon is worth a gamble. I've been looking for some newcomers that impress and it sounds like this one is promising. I'll make sure to strive through that wobbly first third that reviewers and the author mention.

I'm going to assume he's never read Morgan's fantasy, Mark Lawrence or particularly KJ Parker, coz all due respect, you're a little ray of sunshine... :P

I confess, I did raise a brow at the first chapter, but only because of the use of the word 'whore/whores' which made that little section a little more hostile than I thought was necessary.

I've read Lawrence and Morgan and they're both definitely more gritty, at least when it comes to sex and rape. Not too much sex and rape in my book - it gets in the way of good honest violence. KJ Parker is definitely someone I want to read.

In retrospect I'd change quite a few things with the first chapter, whore scene included. Whore scenes in gritty epic fantasy are a bit overdone nowadays.
