[Book Spoilers] Battle of the Fist of the First Men

Ok, so I know in the book we learn details from the battle as Sam remembering them a few chapters into aSoS. But flashbacks don't seem to be a mechanic they are using in the show, so I'm going to assume we won't be seeing it. My point is....

WHY!?!?

They ended Season 2 with an army of Wights advancing on the men of the NW, setting up for one (frozen) hell of a battle. And all we get is LC Mormont lighting one wight on fire. I understand that it's the show and not the book, but that is a letdown and half. I've been waiting ten months to see an undead bear with its flesh sloughing off taking off heads with a swipe of whats left of its paw, and we get one wight.

I'm going to hold onto a fool's hope that we still might see what really happened up there, but I have a feeling that ship has sailed.

Is anyone else as upset as I am with this?

Yeah, I think it was incredibly frustrating; I had been expecting that battle since the end of season two, and all we got was a blizzard and a single wight attacking Sam. Oh, well, I guess they're using all their CGI budget for direwolves, dragons, giants and Jaime's hand; not complaining.

I was furious they portrayed the battle like that.It is really a slap in the face when you think about it.S2 ended with Ser Piggy crying behind a rock because a gigantic army of others and wights were marching to the wall.It literally showed thousands of them and it made you think they would invade the realm.Instead, you see nothing but the aftermath.Pretty lame.

It was very cheap, and I'm not thinking about the budget. I actually think of about 2 ways they could have done it with few money, little time... they simply didn't want to put anything related to it.

I don't mind how the series dealt with it, expect:

1. Ghost. What is he doing there?

2. Chiding Tarly for not sending ravens. How could he, when he was sent out to dig dung? In book, he sent them even if he messed up and sent all without message, still that was warning enough and a show of him overcoming his fear and doing his duty. Here they made him completely useless. Gah!

It is not really HBO's style to show battles at all. Blackwater was an exception, I remember it was awful in Rome when they just showed the lead up to battle, two guys struggling, then the return from battle. We've seen them knock Tyrion out to avoid showing a battle in GoT already. So starting after the battle was a smart decision. Also, I think they wanted to move Sam along, I mean how could they show him getting out of where he was, surrounded by all the wights and Others at the end of last season?

Massive cop out.

Maybe they wrote themselves into a whole with having Sam surrounded by the wight/other army, and including a few noises meant they could get him out of there as well as not have to show a great and important scene.

Yes and Yes! My first thought was, why isn't Ghost with Jon? And poor Sam. He's already a fat coward, but the show had to portray him as a fat, incompetant coward. And no sam the slayer? Maybe that will come later...

I am really, really, dissappointed that we didn't see any zombie polar bears. IMO, I would way rather have rather seen the CGI budget go towards zombie polar bears, than to show Dany's baby dragon flying around.

They didn't need a big battle, but a black screen and a few screams and sounds of clanging metal was a cheat. Show something -- a few rangers firing fire arrows, blue lights approaching from the blinding snow, Mormont ordering a retreat. It was overall a good episode, but the opening scene was terrible. I've seen impressions of non-book readers who think the Night's Watch won.

Also how the hell did the dead NW guy end up holding his own head?!?

My guess is the white walkers set it that way to scare the living? Similar to how they set the parts of corpses in a circle in the first scene of season 1. No other explanation that comes to mind.

I do not have that much of a problem with the lack of battles, I understand the money issues and it would be a little of a waste of time too, so I am okay with the way it was (except Ghost being with the NW instead of Jon and Sam not sending the ravens).

didnt expect a big battle and really wouldnt mind if they never showed a battle if they could just make it look like there more people at times. the nights watch is apprently down to about 12 guys. mance is moving at the wall with his army of about 100 men and one giant
