polishgenius
I don't know about no women being nominated, I don't know who wrote one that might have been. I do know that Dark Eden isn't very good despite the huge potential of the concept and that Angelmaker, while good, isn't nearly as brilliant as The Gone-Away World which wasn't nominated, so what do you know.By far the best SF book I read last year isn't on it, though it was published in January so I dunno if it qualified for nomination (Faith, by John Love)? Nearly Headless Ned
Some people mentioned G Willow Wilson's Alif The Unseen. It's been longlisted for The Orange fiction prize. Also Sharps by KJ Parker isn't getting any love this awards season.
Bastard of Godsgrace
Blah. It beats the Hugo, though, in only thanks to having Dark Eden, which is IMHO very good and would make a worthy winner. Ken MacLeod also isn't bad, but perhaps not award-worthy.Lack of Empty Space which was very strong favorite of the elitist literary crowd (like The Islanders previous years) is sure surprising. Also I happen to think Empty Space is excellent and certainly would deserve a win.And no, I don't see any sensible candidates by female writers on the longlist. Alif the Unseen is an urban fantasy, and besides not very good, and Sharps wasn't nominated, even if ot is more science-fictional than Alif, IMHO.All in all, another rather disappointeing shortlist, even if less so than Hugo and Nebula. Datepalm
Huh, I haven't even heard of two of those (Nod and Dog Stars) and only read 2312 and Intrusion, neither of which is all that great, imo. I found Faith actually unreadable. Couldn't finish it. Really, one of the worst books i've read lately.
Calibandar
I couldn't get into Faith. I also found Harkaways book intriguing in premise but it rambled and simply didn't hold my interest. Didn't finish it.Dark Eden I was excited about, seemed to be a really great new offering. I agree with Polish on that one though, great premise but I found the writing childish and impossible to get into. A real shame.I did really like Peter Heller's Dog Stars though, a landslide winner here for me.
Darth Richard
I think SFF is doomed.
