Mine:

Cold Showers - Double Life (cover of The Cars)

The Clash - Police and Thieves(cover of Junior Murvin)

Beck - True Love Will Find You in the End (cover of Daniel Johnston)

Swans - Love Will Tear Us Apart (cover of Joy Division)

Scarlett Johansson - Fannin Street (cover of Tom Waits)

(I'm sure some others will come to me over time, but we'll start with that...)

P.S. The first person to mention a cover of 'Hallelujah' gets hit... seriously, that song has been covered so many times at this point I'm even starting to hold the John Cale and Jeff Buckley versions in contempt.

Any recording of a Schubert song that's any good. There aren't any originals for a guy that died in 1828. /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> This isn't entirely a jest but also a reminder that for composed songs any performance is in effect "a cover". To be sure the performers are meant to follow the text and score strictly: the art is in the expressiveness of the singer and the musicians in rendering the same. (Some day I will get some of you to understand and appreciate the art song /smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Cocaine - Eric Clapton (cover of JJ Cale)

After Midnight - Eric Clapton (cover of JJ Cale)

Paint It, Black - Eric Burdon and The Animals (cover of The Rolling Stones)

Take Me to the River - The Talking Heads (cover of Al Green)

Almost Grown* - David Bowie (cover of Chuck Berry)

Amsterdam* - David Bowie (cover of Jacques Brel)

See Emily Play - David Bowie (cover of Pink Floyd)

Sweet Jane - Mott The Hoople (cover of The Velvet Underground)

Probably think of more later (Bowie did an entire album of covers)

*The versions of these two songs I like the best are from the Bowie at the Beeb album, unfortunately I can't find those versions on youtube

Fear Factory's cover of Millennium (the Killing Joke one, not the Robbie Williams!)

Marilyn Manson's Tainted Love, though I'm not so keen on his Sweet Dreams cover

Also a big fan of the Snake River Conspiracy cover of Lovesong.

(you may see a theme emerging here. Anyone guess that I'm an ex-goth who now prefers electronic metal? /leaving.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':leaving:' />)

I have a guilty pleasure involving punk/metal covers of other genre's. So I will add Crazy by the Kidney Thieves. I also enjoyed several of Metallica's from the double album.

Lots of great answers in this topic.

Not to be a total Stannis, though, but most of these are not covers, they are remakes. A recording is only really a cover if it is released at around the same time as the original. A true cover often competes with the original on the charts.
