Canadian Politics II: The Polite War

There is different ways of betraying your country Didn't he help al Qaeda or something? I don't know about Canada but I believe America is on war against them and the other Sunni terrorist groups

Canada has not declared war against Al qaeda.

It says he is 27 And don't they wait until the child is an adult to do the punishment?

He's 27 now, he was 15 or 16 when he was detained.

So now he should be able to face punishment yes? And didn't Canada help America invade Iraq and Afghanistan?

Nope, just because he's an adult now doesn't all of a sudden make him not a child soldier at the time. Also Canada only invaded Afghanistan and never made a formal declaration of war. In fact AFAIK Canada hasn't made a formal declaration of war since the Second World War.

He was taken as a child by his father to Afghanistan. He was put in a horrible situation by his father. The Hague does not wait until child soldiers are of age so that they can be prosecuted.

Canada had nothing to do with Iraq and its involvement in Afghanistan was occupation, not invasion.

Well to be fair there was a handful of soldier in a exchange program with the US and some special forces getting some embassy people out.

The US didn't invade either. IIRC they occupied places taken over by the Northern Alliance, and bombed places held by the Taliban, but they didn't invade Taliban held territory. It was Bush's way of getting around the UN, the wily bastard.

Doesn't he basically have no power left at all as Mayor? You might as well keep electing him to serve as comic relief.

He's still got plenty of power. They could only strip him of the powers granted to him by the council, not those granted to him by the office itself.

Actually, his powers have been very heavily circumscribed. The provincial City of Toronto Act ascribes primarily ceremonial duties to the office of mayor (Ford would make a great Wil Whitfoot is he was 3 1/2 feet tall).

The one exception is the power to decree emergencies -- Ford still has that power but Council reserves the right to determine the nature of the response so he's been limited there. As for acting as the city's official representative, it takes two to tango. At the provincial level Kathleen Wynne has eschewed dealing with Ford, preferring instead Norm Kelly. Technically that's in abrogation of provincial law but Wynne has judged the situation dire to the extent that she feels such a course of action necessary.

I don't think he has a chance of re-election. There will be more yet to come in these revelations, and at best his running away to "rehab" represents a Hail Mary campaign ploy. As ever, he only reacts when he gets caught. And he didn't apologize for any of this.

So fuck him. I don't "wish him well" in his "recovery" because I don't believe that has anything to do with his exile from the city. The only sign he's ready to clean up his life would be a resignation and a promise to get out of politics for good.

Well, the NDP in Ontario are being fucking morons.

Kathleen Wynne pulled the plug on her minority government Friday following word from the NDP that it would not support the latest budget -- a move that will send Ontarians to the polls on June 12.

Wynne visited Lieut.-Gov. David Onley Friday afternoon to request that he dissolve the legislature following word from NDP Leader Andrea Horwath that her caucus would not support the budget tabled Thursday.

Wynne said she was prepared to debate and implement her government’s budget, and was “disappointed” to hear of Horwath’s intentions. The NDP leader had propped up the minority Liberals by supporting its last two budgets after negotiating concessions.

Basically, despite the budget being an NDP wet dream, they are gonna tank this government, as the conservatives are riding high in the polls, because ... who the fuck can tell. It seems mostly to be based on them thinking they can pick up a few more seats.

Anyone think he'll be re-elected? Ford nation still seems pretty strong.

A lot of people think the Leafs have a good shot at the Stanley Cup next year also. I have always wondered about the overlap between the two groups.

Interesting to see that Rob Ford had to "withdraw his request" to enter the USA, which, between the lines, means US border authorities told him they could refuse him entry, which would make future entry difficult, or he could withdraw his request voluntarily.

A few weeks ago he was good enough to appear on late night tv and be laughed at, but now he's too dangerous to let in to attend a rehab centre.
