Full List of GoT Characters [SPOILERS]

Here's the list of all the named characters, portrayed by human actors, that have already appeared on the TV show by now (S05 E09), using only the extremely detailed Game of Thrones Wiki as reference.

Some characters, whose actual names we don't know, such as Hodor, Old Nan and the Spice King, are exceptionally included, considering that they are known by those nicknames or titles.

I will also keep count of the number of appearances (episodes) of each character, using that information to arrange them in order.

Please, feel free to indicate in the comments characters that I eventually forgot to add. Let's see how high this number will be at the end of the series!

It's insane. Though I would vote for including the extras. Go Cheese Boy!

And you may include the Dragons, Kittens and Direwolves as well. I'd argue that Ghost for example is a character.

Btw. for those interested, there's a quiz on sporcle of the 300 most named characters in the books. You're a real GoT / ASoIaF nerd if you can solve that one! Link

You forgot Tywin Lannister

You're right! There is no excuse for that! With Tywin, the number goes up to 128!

I didn't want to include the unnamed extras because I think it is a little bit difficult to remember them all! But if you want to, go ahead! :D

If you go to extras, it will be very hard to distinguish what constitutes a real character and what not. So I'm okay with going by the rule of "this character has a name". For the animals, this would constitute to:

Ghost

Summer

Nymeria

Lady

Black Dragon (Drogon has not been named so far)

Grey Wind hasn't been named and the other dragons so far don't have much personality ;)

Btw. Why don't you just take the imdb list? Okay, due to the speculation rampant on the site, it may be a bit wonky on the season 3 (upcoming) character), but it's certainly a good starting point ;)

Also, your list is hard to overview, I think you forgot Armory Lorch as well?

Why would you add in the animals and CGI-beasts? His starting question is "how big is the cast exactly".

I'd only add in those that had to be cast, so actual actors that played a role with a name in the series, noone else.

Also, Amory lorch is second from the bottom of the list.

you forgot Jon Arryn btw, but really nice list you got there

Exactly, That's what I wanted for this list. Only humans! The main point is to know how many actors will be involved in the TV series.

Amory Lorch is on the list but Jon Arryn isn't, nor Hoster! And I forgot Timett! I will edit it! And I will try to make it a little bit more organized.

Characters I believe you've forgotten:

Jeyne Poole

Mikken

Chella, daughter of Cheyk

Martyn Lannister

Willem Lannister

Shireen Lannister (yet to appear, but cast & set to appeal in S3)

Mhaegen – prostitute in KL & mother of Barra, one of Robert's bastard daughters

Sir Boros Blount

Sir Mandon Moore (deceased)

Aggo & Jhogo – Dany's other two bloodriders

Jhiqui - Dany's third handmaiden

I'm not sure if some of these were left off because you're counting them as extras, but they were specifically named cast members. Maybe not all had lines, but they were cast & named.

Also, there are a couple of characters, like Jhiqui, that seem to have been Ainsley'd for no discernable reason. (Then again, very few of the changes that have made the TV series so drastically different from the novels as to almost be called AU version of ASOIAF have been made for an easily discernable reason).

I will add confirmed characters yet to appear (Shireen, Selyse, etc) when they effectively appear.

As for Jeyne, Mhaegen, Aggo and Jhogo, I didn't even know that they were cast. Were they?

If you want to make a complete list, I'd suggest you going through Ran's reviews or the wikiepdia articles for each episode. Only from episode 3x03 you are missing the slaver Greizhen, and the three whores Genna, Marei and Kayla.

Jeyne: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Jeyne_Poole - while I can't find a listing for the actress that played her, if you go to the wiki page I linked, there's a screenshot of her from the feast at Winterfell in S1; that's Sansa in profile on the right of the screenshot with her.

Mhaegen: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Mhaegen - unnamed in the books, Barra's mother was given the name of Mhaegen for the series and portrayed by Antonia Christophers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF51EjaQAOE - apparently I was wrong about Jhogo- they've apparently replaced him with Kovarro, but Aggo is the third in the group. No actor name found for him either, unfortunately, but he's there.

Also, Selyse Baratheon was played by Sarah McKeever in "The North Remembers" according to IMDB. She was in the scene on the beach when Stannis burned the statues of the Seven. She didn't have any spoken lines either, but she was there.

Yes, I think I'll do that. Or maybe the IMDB cast lists, or the ones from Game of Thrones Wiki.

You're listing an awful lot of minor characters who make only a few appearances of little import. In terms of the major players, it's really not any more complex than The Wire. Season 1 alone had the following:

The Detail: McNulty, Daniels, Lester, Kima, Herc, Carver, Prez, Sydnor, Santangelo, Polk, Mahone

Barksdale Gang: Avon, Stringer, Deangelo, Bodie, Poot, Wallace, Maurice Levy, Orlando, Wee-Bay, Stinkum, Savino, Bird

BPD/Downtown: Bunk, Burrell, Rawls, Phelan, Rhonda, Clay Davis, Landsman

Independent: Bubbles, Omar, Shardene, Johnny, Proposition Joe, Brandon, Marla Daniels, Cheryl, McNulty Family

GOT S1 contained the following:

House Stark: Ned, Cat, Sansa, Arya, Robb, Luwin, Theon, Jory, Rodrik

House Lannister: Cersei, Jaime, Tyrion, Tywin, Bronn, Lancel, The Hound

House Baratheon: Robert, Renly, Gendry

House Targaryen: Dany, Drogo, Viserys, Jorah, Illyrio, Irri, Doreah, Rakharo,

Other/Independent: Varys, Littlefinger, Lyssa, Barristan,

Night's Watch: Jon, Benjen, Sam, Mormont, Yoren, Thorne, Aemon, Pyp, Grenn

Bold = major character

Italic = secondary character

By my count, The Wire has 13 major characters, 15 secondary characters, 11 recurring tertiary characters, aligns almost exactly with 13 primary, 12 secondary, 16 tertiary characters. Obviously people get promoted/demoted as they are introduced, expanded, or killed off, but the point remains - it's complex, but not unprecedented.

With this list, my main point is just to see how many officially cast characters this TV series will have by its end.

I didn't intend to make any comparisons. If you got that impression because of something I said, I apologize.

And when I said that this is the show with the biggest cast on TV, I think I didn't lie, given the fact that The Wire isn't currently airing.

Well yes, if you want to see how many actors were involved, then this is the way to go, but then you need to include everybody with one line or another purpose, like the Warlock Assassin Girl from Episode 301 or the Whores from ep 3. Or maybe even Varys little bird/girl from ep 201 (when LF and Cersei 'talk'). But I stay with my opinion that the animals are "characters" on the show since they influence the story more than say a mirror would or the chairs from that first Small council scene in season 3 do. But okay, it's the thread opener that needs to decide that ;)

You're totally correct with regards to the number of characters. However there's one major distinction between the Wire and Game of Thrones. The latter plays in a Fantasy World where we need to be told the Geography, History, and Familial Relations whereas we know where Baltimore is already and what the institutions of the city are. There's new background info as well there (not everbody's an expert on organized crime), but it's to a smaller degree.

Cause Bran, Joffrey, Syrio Forel, Hodor, Shae, Osha... (the list goes on) are not even tertiary characters in Game of Thrones right?

Quick definition: A tertiary character is a character whose purpose and significance are little, even if they appear in more than one episode. These characters can be stock characters or joke characters; if they are granted higher importance than that, they can be bumped to a secondary character.

I think there are a decent amount of characters with at least some significance to the series that you left out.

Peasant Rebel Leader:

As you can see in the first post of this thread, I decided to include only named human characters (with rare exceptions - The Spice King, for instance), using the Game of Thrones Wiki articles of all the episodes as reference.

I had to establish some kind of rules (or parameters, or requirements, or whatever you want to call them) for this listing... So I made the choice to do it this way.
