[book spoilers] TV Margaery vs Book Margaery

Recommended Posts

I think this episode cemented how clever TV Margaery is. She understands Joff so well and has him completely wrapped around her little finger (as it were). And incredible respect for the quailty of acting Natalie Dormer has brought to the role- the look she shot Cersi before walking out with Joff spoke volumes.

I think it's a great change from the books. Before she just seemed like a pawn, ot even worse, a literary device to link the Tyrells to the Lannisters; in the show, she's willful and completely part of the plan.

It of course, makes me wonder what they're going to have happen to her in order to change their minds to make the PW happen.

Any thoughts?

Margaery's pretty clever in the novels. It's just not so obvious because we don't have a camera on her without an outside POV.

I find the TV show character feels too much like Anne Boelyn from The Tudors. Which is not surprising, but not exactly desirable.

She is acting very similar isn't she? But damn, it suits her.

I feel the same.

Also getting a Kate Middleton vibe from her performance too. That might be a bit of a random observation, though.

She's just as conniving as Dormer Boleyn but they've tried to take her somewhere different with the whole Princess of the People thing, like with the talking to the orphans and waving to the crowds. Need more of that. The flowers and sunshine aspect of the character.

What if the PW was actually an attempt to poison Tyrion to get Sansa away from him and marry her to a Tyrell? I've seen that theory thrown around ... maybe poisoning Joff was just a happy accident (if it was the pie that was poisoned, and not the wine).

I think Margaery was portrayed as clever in the books. She is just younger. She is also not POV in the books so you don't get inside her head but I definately got the impression in the books that she could handle herself, and that she was the protege of the queen of thorns. I think the show is pretty consistent with that. Natalie Dormer is very magnetic in her portrayal to, hottest girl on the show to me, but I'm in my 30's and I can dig her a lot easier than some of the younger girls.

Same. ~~Natalie Dormer~~

I think she's doing great, and I don't find her to be all that different except for the age thing. Mags was pretty obviously a clever girl who knew her way around the Game in the books, too. She was pretty Anne Boleyn-like too - wasn't she originally being groomed to seduce King Robert, or something like that?

Her being a touch older is going to make the Tommen stuff even more awkward, though.

I agree, I think Natalie Dormer is so great! I love the show Margaery much more that the book one. And when she shot Cersei that look and the crowd was cheering for her (then Jeoff) I couldn't help but thing about Cercei's prophecy, I think Margeary is the girl the lady was talking about.

I've seen in your reviews you've also singled out Dormer and her portrayal of Margaery as something you're not a fan of. Would you care to elaborate more on that as I find it a little odd given that the overall consensus from most fans and critics is that both the performance and the characterization is something that has been very well done.

Margaery is awesome in the show. I don't think it's her fault she has similar traits in The Tudors. Plus, Ann Boleyn was manipulative and sly, but she didn't keep Henry whipped for long. Her character could not adapt to that and had problems controlling her temper--season 2 was a downward spiral. Margaery's more of a schemer. She doesn't just string Joffrey along and make him crazy about her, she makes him outright behave. Granted, if events turned out differently, Margaery could have lost control of Joff, but she's not just pulling the "keep him wanting more" card.

Also, I think Dormer strikes a great balance between manipulativeness and kindness. You know she's calculating and always choosing the best tool for the job, but she comes across as so nice. It's great how she can go between them.

The fleshing out, so to speak, of Margaery has been one of the best things about this season, IMO. I was not pleased when I first read that Natalie Dormer had been cast, because she is just so much older, but they've made it work (and they aged up all the other teens anyway). It makes so much sense to have a Marg who is this adept at manipulation. As others have mentioned, we only saw her in the books through the lens of others' perspective, so she wasn't as fully realized as a character.

Dormer is glowingly beautiful (even if she dresses like a harlot :D) and is living and breathing the role.
