(No spoilers) Poor Lannister kids

Did anyone else think that with this scene, the show established one of its most brutal and haunting scenes up to this point? The slaughter of children will of course always be somewhat brutal, but I feared we could have another 'stable boy' type killing. As short as their role was, those kids did really well, and the way it was filmed / executed as a whole made it look like a nightmare. I imagine if you don't know what's happening, it might be even more so. This was definitely a very good scene that had an impact, imo.

It was easier to sympathise (though not agree) with Karstark in the books, when the killing was mercifully told rather than shown. Showing it was enough to make me hate him, and I was almost cheering when his head rolled (restrained by the fact that there are bound to be ramifications for Robb)

I hate Karstark. I get it that the Northmen are more sullen and willing to hold onto grudges longer and expect their voice to be the one the King listens to every time, but the man was far less emotionally stable than even Catelyn and really screwed his king and country over.

It's a horrible thing anyway, but having that scene start from the perspective of the children was a very good way to build even more sympathy for them. It made the whole thing even more distressing and brutal.

"Is this a rescue?" :bawl:

When he said that, I said out loud "Nope, your going to die!"

Karstark breaking the door down and yelling was extremely terrifying, given his huge stature, severe and angry face, and his great white beard, especially since I knew what was going to happen beforehand.

I didn't feel any special sympathy.

Thousands of kids have been slaughtered in the Riverlands during the year of the war between the Lannisters and the North. The Mountain wandered aimlessly through villages and the country-side. Killing innocent civilians, innocent kids, burning down houses and destroying anyone and anything that came in his path.

Nobody here ever made a thread how sad it was that so many innocent lowborn children died.

But now 2 highborn brats get killed, with a reason, and we all weep and cry and sob.

I don't think feeling bad for these kids means you can't feel bad for the Riverlands or that it means you're making excuses for the Mountain and Tywin... It simply means you're capable of seeing these boys are not responsible for the crimes of the Mountain...

Don't be that guy.

Nobody said they do not grieve and feel for the all the poor unnamed people that were killed during the war. This thread is exactly to point out that killing children is wrong, regardless of which social standard they are (nobody especially pointed out that they were highborn either).

I agree that the casting of Karstark was excellent and that the scene was very emotional. It was a no-win situation for Robb: either he kills Karstark and loses half of his army, or he keeps listening to his complaining and comes out as weak (which may cost him trust of other men).

True. But also, nobody ever said that they do feel for all the lowborn victims. For me, that is almost the same thing.

Yes, it's a weird argument, because the books and tv-show are fiction. I'm not sure how to think about people not caring about some non-existing victims. But at the same time, they do care about other non-existing victims.

Ever since I started to read the books, I realized that there is this issue that I am unclear about. Most of the POV characters are high-born. I am a democrat (not in the USA-sense of the word). I am not a monarchist. (We got a new Usurper in my country yesterday). I think all people are equal. I loathe any form of aristocracy. I always root for the underdogs (like most other people do). But in this book, many of the underdogs are not really underdogs. Like little Rickon. Like these 2 Lannister kids. Even Jon Snow, Sam Tarly and Tyrion Lannister are not truly underdogs. They are still highborn, had a proper education, can read, have special priviliges. And even in the worst of times, their outlooks are a lot better than that of the common folk. The real underdogs are the nameless victims of the war. The lowborn.

(Edit: I tried to search for threads on these forums discussing lowborn casualties. Search is disabled. I've been reading these forums for over a year. I can't remember seeing any thread ever discussing the common folks).
