Spilly
GRRM created a fourth continent of Ulthos, very very very far east. My question is why? Was it created just to help build the world in ASOIAF? Or is there some importance to the story? Has it been mentioned in the books?
Fat Mac
World building I'd say. I don't think it will ever really be explained. And no, no one in the books have mentioned it.
King of Winters
I think GRRM said somewhere that the furthest east we'd go is Qarth, I think it's just there to help build the world of Ice and Fire. It may be mentioned in the next books, who knows.
yolkboy
The cynic in me says that it was created to make the buyers of the map-books feel good about their purchase.
Light a wight tonight
It's there to prevent Dany from sailing from east from Essos to the west coast of Westeros.
Starfell
World building I guess. We don't know how big Sothoryos is but even with that, Planetos feels a bit ... bare without some other land masses
Maegor the Cuddly
To set up the next ASOIAF miniseries! The Adventures of Gerion Lannister! Gerion Lannister in: Lannisters of the Lost (story) Arc, The Temple of Retcon, and The Last Sequel. (Well what about the fourth movie? What fourth movie?) Winterz
World building I'd say. I don't think it will ever really be explained.Mostly this but I think we might get some references during the flashbacks on Asshai. After all, it's right south of it.It doesn't seem to trade of any kind with other locations though.
The Mother of The Others
it keeps Westeros from getting a big ego? "Hey, you're not the only continent in town, bucko!"Also, as a PSA, Yolkboy's next post will be the 666th!

Florina Laufeyson
World building I'd say. I don't think it will ever really be explained. And no, no one in the books have mentioned it.Yeah its world building and it doesnt need to be explained. Its just there to make the world feel more three dimensional. Perhaps future D&E stories or sequels or whatever will feature Ulthos and Yi Ti in more detail.
