[TV & Book Spoilers] Littlefinger's Monologue

"Chaos isn't a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, never have to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb but they refuse, they cling to the realm or the Gods or love, (not sure what he says next but I think he says 'confusions'), only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is."

I found this to be my favorite scene in this episode and it had me shivering from the first line. Of course there's a bit before with Varys but I think this truly unveils how Littlefinger sees the game he's playing and how people ascend into it. I find it interesting that it focuses on the sobbing Sansa when he talks of those refusing to climb, I'm thinking we've got some serious foreshadowing there. As for Ros there's a different thread for her but I'm personally fine with her departure. We've seen how Varys is someone who you don't want to mess with (that scene with the sorcerer from some weeks back) now we get to see Littlefinger's claws and I just want to see more. I'm supposing that last scene where Sansa was watching the boat was certainly him finally leaving for the Eyrie.

Your thoughts on this scene and the monologue? I thought it was superb.

Are there any other monologues as good as that in the series?

he says "illusions" meaning that the realm, the gods or love aren't real and only the ladder is.

I totally agree with you. Sansa's crying watching the ship and Ros' gruesome death made that monologue very intense. In my view, it also justifies Vary's line about LF "He would see this country burn if he could be king of the ashes."

I was looking at the season 3 promo again, a little bit of it was left out (they refuse, illusions) but the timing of the shots, is roughly:

Chaos isn't a pit, chaos is a ladder. (Dany, Tyrion)

Many who try to climb it fail, never get to try again. The fall breaks them. (Sansa, Joffrey, Sandor, Jaime, Cersei)

And some are given a chance to climb, but they refuse. They cling to the realm, or the gods, or love. Illusions. (Arya, Robb, Catelyn, Jon Snow)

Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.

Maybe there's nothing to the order, just thought I'd look...

I was thinking the same, and also Sandor, they did sort of climb by joining the Kingsguard. Jaime had to stand by while the queen was beaten, Sandor had to stand by while Sansa was beaten. They both had bad experiences with it. And both walked off the job!
