[BOOK SPOILERS] Kevan Lannister

The search function isn't working so apologies if this has already been brought up...

First of all a little experiment... if any non-book readers have made it here past the warning of VERY VAGUE MINOR BOOK SPOILERS ONLY IN THE LAST PARAGRAPH OF THIS POST, could you please answer me this one question... does the name Kevan Lannister mean anything at all to you, and can you recall any scenes with him?

......... [tumbleweeds and crickets?]

My point is, when are we going to see more of Kevan Lannister???

Surely this season was the prime opportunity to show some more of him and get non-book readers more acquainted with him... he could have been present in small council meetings and certainly at Sansa and Tyrion's wedding, plus Martyn and Willem's deaths at the hands of Rickard Karstark could surely have provided the ideal excuse to bring him up again (they are his sons after all).

Surely he could have bumped into Tywin at some point and he could be like "oh hey brother, how's Lancel doing? So sorry to hear about your sons, the northerners will pay for this!" This would also address the whole "where's Lancel" situation for non-book readers.

The issue is that I doubt 95% of non-book readers even remember him or would know who he is if he popped up now! He was in two scenes in season 1 and one throwaway appearance in season 2 despite several other Lannister meetings occurring at Harrenhal in which he could have appeared. I'm pretty sure he's only been named once!

I know he really isn't a major character at all, but if they want to include certain events from ADwD in the show then they need to start bringing him back in!

He isn't really needed for this season, I don't deny that, but can he really just pop up for a couple of scenes next season and expect viewers to remember who he is or care about him for upcoming events?

Don't get me wrong I'm not overly bothered about this, just thought I'd bring it up to see if anyone actually remembers the guy!

And yes I suppose there isn't such a thing as a 'minor spoiler', but you'll admit that any potential spoiler was the vaguest of vague spoilers that only really spoils the fact that he's around in ADwD :)

Maybe they could have thrown him in there. It probably would have made more sense to see him this season than just a glimpse in season one. But you have to remember how big the cast is at the moment, and in the grand scheme of things an appearance by a minor character like Kevan probably doesn't serve much of a purpose when you take the budget into account. The only scenes this season (so far) I can think of Kevan having any relevance would be at Tyrion and Sansa's wedding - but even then, what's really the point?

I think they'll wait to reintroduce him early next season, to have him progress with the events of the Purple Wedding.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but was it even established in season one who Kevan was? I can't remember if Tyrion referred to him as uncle or not.

Kevan and Lancel have both been swallowed by the plot, they arent important at this time and natural exclusions

This is true but that will change significantly by the end of next season.

They could at least make mention of them.

Kevan's role has been fairly insignificant thus far all together, he's usually just looming in the background of Tywin's scenes, occasionally delivering a line.

Lancel on the the other hand, was quite prominent in both season 1, and season 2. It's strange not seeing him this season to me, though I guess he's still nursing his wound from Blackwater/Cersei

Both Kevan and Lancel need to pop up at some point, possibly next season. Kevan is a relevant enough character later on, and Lancel has been around already, so they wouldn't just drop him altogether.

Before Tywin's death I had never payed attention to Kevan. I knew he existed, but that's all. I didn't think he would ever become important, so I used to think he was just another background character to make the world feel bigger. It was only in AFFC that I realized he was going to play a role, so I don't mind his disappearance this season. The disappearance that bothers me, though, is Tommen's. He's going to be king next season, dammit!

Yes, it's kind of inexplicable how characters that previously held some relevance (Lancel, Greatjon Umber, Ser Alliser Thorne), even if only minutely (Ser Kevan Lannister, Prince Tommen) suddenly up and disappear. I wouldn't say it's a "big" problem, though with Tommen and the Lannisters it will be, but it is very annoying if nothing else.

I'm hoping they all make returns next season, particularly Ser Alliser. The guy gets sent to King's Landing in season 1, and becomes a note in the small councils hand in season 2 or 3? Wtf?

I know the Greatjon isn't returning though. That just sucks. I was really looking forward to him kicking major ass three sheets to the wind drunk at the twins. Total bummer.

Great Jon umber was not fat.

And Robb's story has been suffering ever since.

Blackfish trying to fill both roles isn't working for me.

And if alliser doesn't return along with slynt Jon's story is going to suffer as well.

Pretty sure the actor who played the Greatjon didn't return because he was already contracted somewhere else when season two started shooting, not because he wasn't wanted on the show.

The show has a ridiculous amount of recurring characters as it is. They need to cut the fat where they can.

Tough shit. They knew what they were getting themselves into when they took on the task of adapting the books.

Many of these cut/merged/disappearing characters play important roles relevant to the main cast. To cut them hurts the story, and the characters development.

I too was a bit bothered by Ser Allisers no show in season 2, but I'm fairly confident that he'll turn up again next season, he may well be made into the chief antagonist to Jon for his ADwD events since we don't have a Bowen Marsh... Janis Slynt on the other hand I think will be cut and combined with Thorne.

But if you had your way the show simply could not be made. It's the lesser of two evils.
