Secret Targaryens

How could anybody besides Dany, Jon, or Aegon be a Targ? We know for certain Dany is one and Aegon and Jon could be one if Aegon isn't a fake and R+L=J is true. I'm just curious as to how theories like Tyrion and other characters being one came around.

Theories like that come up because some people like grasping at straws. That's what the Tyrion theory is all about, anyway. There are countless others with just as little, or even less evidence. Looking for secret Targs is peoples' favorite pastime till TWoW gets released. :P

The books are littered with clues that other people could be secret Targs, or at least have some type of connection with them. Alot of them could just be Red Herrings, and alot of them could be misinterpretations, but there is always the possibility some of them might end up being true. One I can think of off the top of my head is Jaime's dream in Riverrun where he talks with the Silent Sister who is probably his mother Joanna Lannister (Feast for Crows). When you cross reference Jaime's dream with the fact that Aerys lusted for Joanna Lannister, it really doesn't seem too crazy, but again it is all how you interpret it. The Targaryens were the ruling family of the continent for a looooong time and the King after Aerys wanted to kill every Targaryen remaining, so it wouldn't be surprising if there were some that were kept secret. Most notably Jon Snow, Ned couldn't even tell his best friend King Robert the truth about Jon because he is probably a Targ and probably Lyanna's son.

The only secret Targ theory I like is R+L=J, and I believe Aegon is a secret Blackfyre.

Jon is the only secret Targaryen in the books. THE END.

:agree:

I dislike people coming up with secret Targ theories based on flimsy or no evidence. The people who believe in R+L=J did their HW, while everyone else is trying to look smart by coming up with other secret Targ theories that end up backfiring.

Varys has a shaved head like Egg.

Everybody knows that none of the Lannister children are Tywin's. This is based on things like the dragon dreams, the liberties Aerys took in bedding at Tywin's wedding and some other things as well.

Honestly, every character is a hidden Targ unless proven otherwise.

You forgot Maester Aemon.

"Secret" is a bit of a stretch here. People know, and we get told in the very first book, the very first time we get any deeper backstory about that character at all.

Might as well call King Robert a secret Targ, because he has Targaryen ancestors and we're not told the very first minute his character is introduced.

Well then are we talking about a "secret" to the reader or a "secret" to the inhabitants?

To the reader, Aemon was a secret Targ at the beginning, he may not have been a "secret" to those who knew him but he was at the very least forgotten by everyone outside the Wall.

There's a surprising amount of evidence to make the argument that Tyrion is Aerys' son, as well, I don't understand why people are so quick to brush it off (or get so defensive).

The obvious lusting of Joanna by Aerys and the First Night comment

Mismatched eyes is a Targ trait

With visions/dream (Moqorro telling Tyrion he rides a dragon, Tyrion dreaming he is Maelys the Monstrous, Tyrion having dreams of dragons as s child)

Tyrion obsession with fire and dragons in general

Tywins words ("Since I cant prove youre not mine" & "You are no son of mine", etc)

Multiple references to Tryion being a "Giant" & Robert Arryn saying he wants to see him fly

Theres a lot more out there, I'm not saying its a definite but there are definitely clues left by GRRM, whether its a Red Herring or it isnt.

You forgot Maester Aemon.

Maester Aemon doesn`t hide he`s Targaryen. He actually says that, and we readers know that.He isn`t hidden Targaryen by any account like for instance Jon.

Strictly speaking, in "real" terms there are actually a metric ton of secret Targaryens floating around, just from Aegon VI's proclivities alone. This is why, by the way, the "magical dragon blood with powers" thing doesn't sit well with me, because in that case you could have Riverlands Peasant #3422 riding a damn dragon.

However, in narrative terms, I believe there's one secret Targaryen, and that's Jon.

I suspect Jaime and Cersei are more likely to be secret Targaryens (Aerys + Joanna) than Tyrion.

That being said, I don't think they are. On the other hand I am more than willing to believe Jon Snow is one.

If Aegon isn't what he purports to be, then he's still a Targaryen, albeit of the bastard Blackfyre branch. Black or red, a dragon is still a dragon. But you can't really call him a "secret Targaryen" because he's quite openly claiming to be one, and if he isn't from one branch of the family, he's from another.

Likewise Aemon is no secret - he's just a long way away from the rest of the Kingdom, and takes his duties (including a DOUBLE renunciation of family ties, both as a Maester and a Watchman) seriously.
