noSer
Just saw a quote from Peter Dinkladge AFTER the RW aired where he said "if you think this has a happy ending you haven't been paying attention". We have all spent countless hours on theories analysis and the likewise but after him saying this after not about the RW it just hit me that maybe no one wins in the end. Maybe every theory right or wrong was a waste of time and they all die. Jon Dany Arya Stannis Bran freaking Hodor....everyone!OMG HAVE I WASTED MY LIFE???!!! Knight Of Winter
It's natural to feel upset enraged after RW, but don't let that destroy the series for you.It would hardly make sense in George wrote all seven books and developed such fantastic characters and world just to kill them all. It wouldn't be just big "screw you" to the readers, it would be major "screw you" to his own story and himself. As Jin noted, George himself said ending will be bittersweet. noSer
Meant that tongue in cheek but beginning to doubt an ending that anyone was rooting for.
Ghost's Shadow
If you think the books have been HAPPY so far, I don't get you...Good people have died for the selfish reasons of others, ten thousands are already slaughtered, the poor small folk... Did that not give anything away?
Blindsie
Well GRRM often talks about LOTR and the final act of the Hobbit's returning to the Shire, after they thought they had saved the world, return to find the Shire in tatters. For GRRM he finds that was the point of the story.I suspect one of the claimants will take the Throne, but there will be losses on every side, and Westeros will be decimated. I mean it looks like there is going to be an invasion of the Others, while everyone has been busy fighting for the throne, the people of Westeros are starving.Whoever is crowned will have a big job ahead of them, healing the realm will be the hardest job of all - nothing more bittersweet than that
Lady Nastja
I wouldn't read too much into it.Peter was quoting Roose Bolton. It had some truth to it, yes, but we already know that there will be no happy ending; it shall be bittersweet. I take that to mean that, while some of our treasured characters will live, many will die. And IMO, that's a good thing. It makes the series all the more realistic, all the more tragic. Where's the realism in an ending where Good defeats Evil and everyone lives? There is none, that is why a bittersweet ending is what we need to finish off the amazing piece of work that is ASoIaF. Shebara
lol...no need for shattered nerves here I think...GRRM is much too intelligent to write a giant epos where everyone dies at the end...would not be an intelligent epos like that...nothing that GRRM would write I think...would not be clever as well to let everyone survive and live happily ever after...so I think bittersweet is the best
Lost Umber
GRRM, March 18, 1999: "No one will be alive by the last book. In fact, they all die in the fifth. The sixth book will be just a thousand-page description of snow blowing across the graves . . ."
Alistair's Pantaloons
If he wants to give us the unexpected instead of what everyone sees coming, he'll put a happy ending in.
