Asoiaf Tattoos

So it's been quite a while that I've been contemplating getting a tattoo with something from Asoiaf woven into it. It took me a few months to get the perfect idea and artist but finally my journey came to a conclusion. The tattoo was only performed a few days ago so the only picture I have is one that was taken only minutes after completion. It'll see some slight colorshifts and fading in the following weeks but nothing major. The tattoo has not one but several definition for me personally so it would be nice not to get comments about how dark or gloomy this is, as for me it's much more a symbol of hope and courage than anything else.

This made me think though. I've seen loads of Asoiaf-tattoos on google image search but found no specific topics here. I was hoping to gather fans in this topic to show of their awesome tats. I'm sure more than a few of visitors here have tattoos involving the asoiaf-universe so this could be a good place to gather them and comment on them.

I'll get this started!

Wow... that last one is awesome! As the maker of the coin I am honored. I love the peeling skin look with all the buckles. Now I need to post this one... this is not me but an image sent by a fan who has the matching tattoo!

You might be interested to know that the designer of the cowled figure and of the enciphered VMVD logo was Greg Franck-Weiby, who passed away a couple years ago. He would be thrilled to see his design appreciated so far and wide.

Wow! You guys put my little tattoo to shame. Diremitar, yours is phenomenal.

The very first time I read the words Valar Morghulis, I had a chill. Especially that Jaquen was one of my favorite characters up to that point. I knew I wanted it tattooed somewhere, but further into the book, I was introduced to Valar Dohaeris. Every man must serve... and I just wasn't sure about it, I didn't like the idea that everyman must serve in the sense of obeing to someone, bow and bend to someone's will, but as I gave it thought, I found another meaning to it (now I know there's someone, lurking this forum day in day out who's gonna correct me pasting 10 articles on the subject, but this is my interpretation.) Everyman must serve means to me that every man must be useful and find his place and his purpose on this planet. So basically what those words mean to me is : Live your life like today was your last. And : Find your purpose in this world.

Also, Peterbound, it's pretty useless to tell people not to get tattoos... It's not everyone's cup of tea and it's fine like that, but you're not gonna change anyone's mind. I assure you that to most people, the decision of permantly branding your body is a well thought one...

Hey guys this is mine....

I used to have a small wolf before I ever started reading the books, that tattoo really sucked ass and it had to be covered but I had no idea what to do with it.As I was going through endless ideas of possible cover ups I started reading the books by chance and then I became a devoted ASOIAF reader. After finishing them it dawned to me that I could do something Stark related since there was already a wolf there.I talked it out with the artist and he proposed to create a whole new bigger better wolf and cover the other underneath its fur.So i came up with the whole Winter Is coming tattoo idea (Direwolf+Trees+Moon+Snowflakes+Stark words)

Let me assure you, I have a metric shit ton of tattoos, and there a couple I wish someone would have said, 'hey, that might be a bad idea. think it out for a while.' Trying to extend that to others.

This is a fucking idiotic idea. Trust me.

So because YOU made a mistake everyone does? What a silly, self-righteous way of thinking... It's not because YOU see a tattoo that you would regret, that the person who got it will...

Wait, You have a made up language, from a fantasy book, that says you will serve someone's will tattooed on your fucking forearms? Tell me again how this was 'thought out'?

That's even worse than a goddamn wolf howling at the moon.

I like the wolf! And I think I can just barely see the old one lurking in the fur. Very cool!

Hey ,most people get tattoo designs based on fantastical themes.Tattooing is art on the skin right??You mean that tattoos only have to be based on things that exist? That having a tiger tattoo is basically right but a direwolf is wrong?Having a phrase in English is right but having it in Valyrian is wrong?I am really trying to understand you here.

You telling someone not to tattoo something from his favourite book on himself is like telling all the artists who have created all the artwork based on ASOIAF that they shouldn't because it is fantasy, it doesn't exist.

Edit: I don't want to seem hostile. What I wanted to say is that, we're all strangers. No one knows each other enough to judge characters/motives etc.You don't know if the person with the Valar Morghulis tattoo will regret it one day.He might and he might not. It's none of our buisiness. As you don't know if I will ever regret my "goddamn wolf howling at the moon" tattoo as you call it.I might and then a again, I might not.Who knows I might never even live long enough to come to a point of regret. My point is, you can never know and it's not very nice to judge people without having the slightest idea of who they are.

I believe having a tattoo inspired by your favourite piece of literature in the whole world is something worth it than having something pointless for no absolute reason.

I like the wolf! And I think I can just barely see the old one lurking in the fur. Very cool!

Thanks ^_^

That wolf is awesome, I love it! My boyfriend's mum has a similar one on her chest, without the words though.

I have a phoenix with 'valar morghulis' underneath because, like LollysLackwit, I had my own interpretation of the words and it means something to me. Now come on, Peterbound, you will never be able to convince anyone to not get a tattoo that means something to them. Many, many people get inspiration for tattoos from music, books, films and other media, and such things can also have a big impact on someone's life. My tattoos can mean jack shit to you - hell, I have a tattoo of two cats and a teapot - and you can think them as shit as you like. I couldn't care less, because they mean something to me, my tattooist is talented, and I love them.

Two cats and a teapot actually seem fucking neat.

A fantasy book that, lets be honest, is having it's 15 minutes may not be the best source to pull from for inspiration. I'm sure all the folks that got some bad ass WOT tattoos in the 90's aren't' looking back and saying 'That was a Good Idea!'.

Also, to get it after the show came out seems... poseur'ish, to me.

I agree with what you said btw.

Peterbound, I am not blaming you for trying to talk people out of getting ASOIAF tattoos,to some extent you are right.A lot of people just get tattoos for the sake of getting tattoos, they don't actually think it through, it's become a trend and yes there are people who tattoo themselves after their so called favourite artists, books, music etc who did it to show off.But you cannot put all of us in the same pot.

About your last remark...What does it even have to do with the show? Who cares if the show came out?For me they are different entities and I didn't get my tattoo for that.I first read the books and then watched the show.Show or not I would have still done it.In my tattoo, "Winter is Coming" doesn't just represent the Stark words, it means a great dead to me personally.

Edit: "deal" not "dead"
