Costume Time Again

Recommended Posts

Kids are going back to school, which means it is time to start thinking about costumes.

This year I may go to Chiller (a horror/sci-fi con in NJ) in October and I want something different to wear. I like the look of steampunk stuff...appeals to my historical side but leaves more room for whimsy.

I was searching the net for ideas, kind of thinking "steampunk safari" when I came across several things I liked.

I love the top and hat in this picture

Here is another person with a similar idea

But both are a little too proper for my taste, so I found this dress pattern. I just want the skirt, done in the same fabric as top, wearing leggings and boots under it.

Add a utility belt, binoculars and few other accessories. At least I hope I have explained it well enough.

So what do you think?

Anyone else planning any costumes this year? Do tell.

I like the patterned costume the best!

I am still toying with the idea of costuming for CapClave...not sure I will do that though.

Halloween will be the same...its the one day I get to come out of my broom closet. My witch's hat and a cauldron full of chocolate :)

Forgot about CapClave. I will wear it then too...getting at least 2 uses out of it ;)

I also do a witch for Halloween every year (Professor McGonagall counts as a witch too---that that the year my son was HP)

How are you doing the costume? Based on the book or the tv show? what will you do?

Definitely book Daario,

Not totally sure still how I'm going to do it, I got some naked lady statues from the flea market and cut them in half for the sword hilts.

Also to be fitted for a gold tooth front in that same flea market.

Since my natural beard growing is pretty pathetic, I'm going to have to go with a fake one.

Ive tried looking for a date willing to go as Dany Targaryen but no luck so far.

:lmao: I would go as Brienne, but I would have to find a 5'0" hot blond guy to be Jaime! :lmao:

Those steampunk-ish costumes you linked are so cool, Lany!

I'd dress that way all the time if I didn't have to fear being committed to an institution. :P

I actually have a jacket that looks a bit like the ones worn in those photos. It's natural linen and it has all the same safari-like styling cues.

Maybe I'll wear it tomorrow!

:jumps up and down:

I won't be dressing up but my kids will :). Daughter 1 has announced she wants to be "Spider-Man Tinkerbell" or maybe Dorothy Gayle. I'm secretly hoping for the latter because while I could do Spider-Man or Tinkerbell I'm afraid my attempt at a mash up wont live up to her expectations. My other daughter has so far said either a mouse or Hello Kitty. I can do that. Lany the stuff you linked is very cool!

I like the second safari look there. Steampunk is such a fun look.

I've had a Pinterest account for awhile, but haven't really used it much until lately. I've got my own costume board that I've been adding to for months now. Haven't made any decisions, but my imagination is definitely sparked.

I need to come up with something too. It has to be appropriate to wear in front of teenagers, which means vaguely comfortable. Last year I threw together a witch costume based on pieces of clothing I had, plus a hat, and ended up getting voted as McGonagall in the 'which Harry Potter character would be each teacher?' poll. Also, it needs to be cheap and easy. Bonus points if it's science related and NOT Miss Frizzle, because I feel like I get compared to her enough already.

Love the pattern - and think it'll look fantastic.

Witches rock

I was going to suggest barbie dolls or some such, but if you've already got the statues, that's awesome.

Lany I love the jacket in the third pic. I can't wait to see your costume.

I'll be costuming at least one day of CapClave, Halloween, and I'm going to ContraFLOW here in New Orleans. Anything I put together will get plenty of use this year. Uh-oh, I'm going to dig into my closet and start chasing my tail in circles getting excited about October.

I'm also window shopping for a dress to wear to dinner at CapClave. Any thoughts on that?
