Petyr Patter
In chemistry, there is something called a "buffer solution." Most solutions (a mixture of liquids) will change their pH values if you add a stronger acid or base to them. However, a buffer solution does not. Within certain parameters, adding a strong acid will not change the pH level. The story of Robb is like that buffer solution. You can change some of the elements, but Martin was writing a tragic end to his life regardless. Releasing Jaime? Didn't change much. Tywin needed some valuable hostages to force an exchange. That was his original plan when using the Mountain to draw out a retaliatory party out of King's Landing, only Ed's broken leg meant he could lead it. Anyways, the Red Wedding would give him Catelyn and Edmure Tully. Does the Blackfish kill Jaime when it would mean certain death for his niece and nephew?Releasing Theon? Martin would still figure out a way for the Dreadfort and the Ironborn to sack Winterfell. Not marry Jeyne? Walder Frey is treacherous by nature, and between the Blackwater, the new Tyrell-Lannsiter alliance, and the loss of Winterfell, he would have looked for ways to switch sides... when he gets a letter from Tywin promising him Riverrun, Harrenhall, and Darry for a single wolf pelt. Heck, he might even had thrown in Cersei to wed one of his middle sons. He needed a husband for her anyways. Really, a lot had to conspire against Robb for him to end up dead in such a dramatic fashion. There is something that could have saved Robb, though. It wasn't a choice, per se, but if Robb had been boring and uninteresting, then his death would have been boring and uninteresting. So, why bother to write it?
