Better Call Saul -- Breaking Bad spin-off confirmed

And it's going to be a prequel, so Saul might still die before BB ends! (though I doubt it)

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this. Obviously Saul's a great character, Odenkirk's awesome, and Vince Gilligan is a great showrunner. But it just seems very odd. I personally hope that Gilligan doesn't devote his time entirely to this, and instead just oversees. I'd rather see him move on to some brand new material. I'm fully prepared to eat crow if this ends up being amazing.

Peter Gould was the one who created Saul's character, so I'd imagine he will have more direct control of the series than Gilligan. It could work, I mean it'll likely be better than anything on AMC after Breaking Bad and Mad Men finish up.

Forget the actual meat of the story, if the acting, cinematography, writing and soundtrack are on or near the level of breaking bad, I can't see it failing.

I'm really turned off by this being a prequel. Other than his criminal connections, what is there about Saul's past that screams 'possibilities?' Honestly, what he would do after BB has me far more interested. Maybe he goes to Bolivia. No, not the Bolivia of the 'shallow, dirt hole' variety but actual, real Bolivia.

Prequel Saul just seems like it would be treading water until the inevitable meeting with Jesse and Walt.

Maybe its misdirection and its just being called a prequel for now to avoid spoiling any part of the end of Breaking Bad.

Otherwise, well it could just be a weekly procedural type show without any long arcs or plots.

I certainly hope so!

I just don't know if Saul is interesting enough by himself to keep such a show viable. Maybe post-BB Saul, but pre-BB Saul? I don't know.

Either way, I'll watch at least a few episodes.

This is what I'm thinking/hoping.

I hope it's an origin story and we see Saul make a significant transformation ala Walter White.

As opposed to a "client of the week" show where Saul is just Saul.

Although that angle could also work if it starts with him not being anywhere near as corrupt. Thing is how much earlier in his life will it be? We have to keep in mind the actor will keep getting older while trying to remain a few years younger than he was 4 years ago. This is why it maybe not being a prequel would make more sense (unless of course he dies).

I think the key thing will not to expect it to be breaking bad. That will lead to disaster as it sounds like it will be a very different type of show. Hopefully it won't be the Caprica to BSG (although there is still a chance for BB to have a shit ending too)
