Coins specifically for use with board games....

Master of Coin

Recommended Posts

I've had some interest lately from folks who would like to use cool coins for the GoT game. I have not played it, but my understanding is that there are some punch-out cardboard "coins" that come with the game... and you play them, up to 15 at a time, on a particular card. But some folks would like to use real metal coins just for the "cool" factor.

The ones I just finished for NOWish games ( http://www.kickstart...-coins?ref=live ) are tiny little things, smaller than a dime. The size was dictated by the size of the space where they can be played.

It seems a bit silly for the size of the coins to be determined by the arbitrary size of the card on which they're played! It should work the other way... the game should accommodate the coins which are of realistic size. I propose to create a shallow "card-tray"... like a cup-holder... that is made to hold the card, but which extends outwards past the card on all sides with a slight lip, so that it can hold a larger number of larger coins, yet still take up very little extra space on the gaming board.

Does this make sense to anybody besides me? This is totally doable.

Have fun!

I don't think you quite understand how the game is played; there are no cards on the board. There are order tokens that get placed directly onto the map, which is split into regions like Starfall, Winterfell, Greywater Watch and the like. I'd be interested in having some coins to play with instead of the cardboard bits. There are also power tokens which work kind of like a currency that could work well as some type of metal coin or token.

Then there is the Iron throne punch out, the Raven, and the valyrian steel sword which could all be converted to metal. The cards themselves stay in hand until you fight a battle, and then go directly to the discard pile when used.

I'd be very interested but I'm a poor man ;D

What are the rates looking like on some custom order or power tokens? There are 15 order tokens per house, with 5 different kinds and 3 of each, totaling 90 tokens for all 6 houses. Then there are 20 power tokens for each house, whose shape and size doesn't matter so much as long as they're not bigger than like a nickel or quarter.

House Stark

House Lannister

House Baratheon

House Greyjoy

House Tyrell

House Martell

We hear and obey!

In the past we have concentrated on the idea of collectible single coins and sets, all conceivable as being FROM the world of Westeros. But the needs of gamers have clearly not been met by the sizes and prices of such coins.

We are currently working on a project that will produce six different small (dime size) brass half-pennies in large quantities that would be perfectly suitable for use in a gaming context, and will be available in sets appropriate for gaming use at reasonable price. Our license does not include specifically targeted gaming tokens with game-specific language, but what we're creating is a series of actual in-world coinage that will bear the images of rulers of the respective houses, and a rendition of the house sigil. Whichever house is not being used by a player, that one can be used as the power token during gameplay. The project and designs have been approved by George's wiki minions, and dies are being cut as we speak.

The houses and rulers we're doing are:

Rickard Stark

Tommen Baratheon

Doran Martell

Loren Lannister

Quellon Greyjoy

Aegon V Targaryen

All thoroughly researched via Wiki. It's not too late to add a Tyrell to the list if it's considered important enough... that would make seven types.

More news will be forthcoming as dies are finished and trial strikes become available.

Be well!

Tom

Awesome Tom, thank you very much for the info :D

Copper/bronze for the houses would do very nicely as power tokens and would feel a lot better in hand, and the ruler displayed would add to its awesomeness and serve the same purpose regardless of which ruler was portrayed. A smart gamer would be able to appropriate such coins to certain game functions as well

Also I want to say I didn't mean to be so brisk in my original post as I have the utmost respect for you guys and what you do, and like I said coins of any kind would contribute a lot to the theme and feel of the game ;D

And... they're now available! We're still working on the final retail packaging, so that my the time you can buy these in stores the package will look different, but the first sets are now available on eBay!

There are 20 identical pieces in each of the house sets, and we've also made some collector-sets available with one of each house. Here are the links:

Of course, once you're at eBay you can click the "Visit Store" link and see all our different GoT coins.

Game on! Tom

And here is the newest gaming coin... this one to be used as the "gold" coin in the LCG game (or in any other way you like)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/141329616789

This is a larger "hand" coin from The Reach, with the head of King Garth XII. On reverse is the hand sigil of House Gardener. It's about 27mm in diameter, which is about the same as the dragon coins, but only weighs about half as much. (as per the story) We're making quite a few of these and are making them available in bulk for gamers at a very attractive price! Of course singles for collectors will always be available. Have fun! These will be realeased in conjunction with a Kickstarter campaign to go live soon, and will be available both as collector singles or as gamers sets sometime in April.

That sounds promising. Will be looking for the Tywin one of course.

We're working on the finishing touches for the Kickstarter campaign to introduce these gaming coins. In order to make them affordable we need to do them in larger batches than we ordinarily do for the collector coins. The dies are finished, and now we need to gather pre-orders through the kickstarter to target production runs. They are awesome! Woody has been working almost non-stop on the hand carved dies for these. The full set of eight houses for the half-dragon coins will include:

Garth Gardener

Oberyn Martell

Stannis Baratheon

Quellon Greyjoy

Daenerys Targaryen

Robb Stark

Mace Tyrell

Tywin Lannister

The gaming sets of 20 will be "mint" coins fresh off the press and new looking. But we will also make available for collectors, singles in their own separate packaging. These will be available either "mint" or "Circulated". The circulated ones have been tumbled and treated by our own process to artificially age them so that they look like they've been pocket-carried for decades.

Stay tuned for the Kickstarter... should go live within a week.

And... YES, we're funded! Please note that the stretch goal has been lowered. The exclusive prize to each backer for that goal will be a two-faced faceless man coin... yes... the faceless face on both sides! Never before made.

The kickstarter was successful, the coins are in production, and we are now putting them up for sale to the public on the website, Amazon, Etsy, and eBay as soon as we can make it happen! Thanks to all for your support!
