Besides, the Starks are a great house, but House Baelish wasn't anything back then. Just a petty lord with a young son.Above all, the second Hoster got wind of Lysa's pregnancy (also thanks to littlefinger), he sent Petyr home. No man will wed his highborn daughter to a lowborn man, whilst that same lowbornman took the virginity of the second daughter (and getting her pregnant, thus ruining many potential marriage deals for her in the proces). Getting the daughter pregnant of the lord that took you in as a ward, is a great insult to that lord. Brandon was the best offer Hoster received for Cat, and if Brandon died in the duel then Cat would just be married off to Ned, since he was next in line to WF. It would be an epic fight but I believe that I would have to go with Brandon. From what we know he was supposed to be a great warrior and more than a match for Rhaegar had the battle taken place. You know, I think he would, if this duel was "official" like a trial by combat is. He'd hate the result, but the law is the law. Then he'd pine about having lost the investment Catelyn represented or something. If it was just some unofficial thing between the boys with Edmure officiating, then he might do as he liked. But in reality, Cat didn't love LF. Hoster didn't want Cat to marry LF. And Brandon was tougher than LF. It was a no win scenario for the little lad.
