Lady Catelyn and Stewardship Executions

When Eddard departed for King's Landing to take up the Handship of the King he left Catelyn in charge of Winterfell, which made her, amongst others, responsible for dispensing the King's Justice. The Starks hold to the belief that the one who passes the sentence should swing the sword. Would Lady Catelyn expected to carry executions out herself or could defer that to someone else of her household?

Catelyn doesn't boast of First Men ancestry so I guess she could have deferred that to someone else, but she would have lost face, somewhat, in front of the Northerners. She was only going to rule for two years, so she can probably deal with that.

But I think carrying the executions herself would have earned her points with the Northerners. None would ask her to execute by beheading, though. I imagine she'd do it by stabbing the prisoner in the hearth.

No, not with the role of women in Westeros. You are right that she is in charge of Winterfell and the North, and right that the Northerns expect the man passing the sentence to wield the sword. But she wouldn't be expected to behead anyone herself. If it came to an execution, I expect some other lord would do it, or else someone of the Stark household (maybe Rodrick Cassel or Theon Greyjoy). Women don't normally wield swords (this is what makes Brienne such a great character).

For that matter, the Hand delivers the King's Justice across the entire Seven Kingdoms. Perhaps if a case was serious or important enough, it would go to Eddard in King's Landing anyways.

I guess her being a woman would outweight her connection (Which is mostly through marriage) to the First Men and their traditions. I think the Northerners would be upset, or at least wouldnt appreciate a woman doing a mans job. In the end it comes down to how Cat wants to handle it I guess.

Pretty much this, nobody will complain if she let Ser Rodrik or Robb to do the executions, I mean, even in the North, I can't imagine Lady Dustin or Hornwood killing anyone herself, not every female in the north is like the Mormonts
