Tower of Joy ( Did they have to fight? )

So Ned has a dream after falling unconscious. The dream consisted of his memories regarding the tower of joy incident where he and 6 of his friends fought the remaining kingsguard members ( Osmund, Gerold, and Arthur ) No doubt they were guarding Lyanna. What I want to know is.. why did these guys have to fight each other? Ned wouldn't have harmed her and after all, her disappearance is what sparked of the war in the first place. Ned wanted to retrieve her.

I'm about 99% sure that if the White Cloaks stepped aside they would have never fought. Alas, they were given orders form Prince Rhaegar to guard the tower. The White Cloaks were loyal to to the royal family and at this time Ned and friends were rebels. Lots of factors play into why they fought. I can tell you that as you keep reading you will be able to formulate ideas as to what happened at the tower. It's one of those times GRRM gives you a little bit of info and sprinkles clues throughout the rest of the story.

They didn't have to fight: The Kingsguard was sworn to protect the King and his family, but Aerys and Rhaegar were dead, and the other Targaryens had fled, so they had nobody to protect but Lyanna, and, if R+L=J, Jon. They could have surrendered, as Ser Barristandid, but they were too proud for that.

I think that part about the algebra might be a spoiler. Also, in case the same is true, they might have had a reason to fight. The king is dead, long live the king and all that...

Well, I don't see it as a spoiler, since it hasn't been confirmed in any book, and is only a theory. I agree with you about the other thing but, if there was nobody willing to accept the baby as the king, and the war was undoubtley lost, then it would have been more sensible to yield. However, they decided to keep their honour and die for their king, as they had sworn to do.
