Is Aegon really a Targaryen? Or is he as false as his hair colour? Some theories I've seen being tossed around are he's the real deal, he's Illyrio's son, he's a Blackfyre, he's the Pisswater Prince and the list goes on. Who is Aegon?

If you've seen the theories, you'll probably realize that you are going to get a lot of varying answers because there are different theories.  Is your goal to create a single thread to see which theory has the most support?  If so, there's a thread recently where someone created a survey and posted the results.  Not sure where it is but I'm sure someone can find the link.

I think Aegon is definitely not son of Rhaegar.  I think the Blackfyre theory is easily the one that has the most support.

Well... there's a lot of evidence to say he's fake, but whwen Tyrion first saw him he was waving a wide brimmed straw hat much like Egg wore when he was travelling with Dunk

I do believe he is fake. BUT it seems sort of weird by GRRM. "Whoow, Aegon Targaryen ALIVE!", and then "oh, nooo its not really Aegon!".. Just seems like bad writing. Only way he is fake, and not bad writing (my opinion) would perhaps be if he turns out to be a blackfyre (but I still think it would be a little lame).

Fake and possibly double fake, a non-Blackfyre sold as one to the Gold Company.

An excellent point :) But I still had that in mind when writing my earlier statement- it still feels kind of cheap, like getting double shock value.

Well, not much of double surprise, when you have in mind that Varys practically pointed out in ACoK that Elia lost one child, plus as was said the entire fake dragon thing... Plus, for those that follow SSM, in early 2000s, GRRM several times said that "Rhaenys is beyond any doubt dead", which would mean that Aegon might have been roaming around somewhere.

I believe he is a Blackfyre pretender but I think it would be cool if he turns out to be Jon's non identical twin brother just so I can see all the rage comments on this board

Aegon's are definitely fake, we got a good thorough description of him in ADWD and it made no mention of abundant cleavage, if he's sporting a rack now they are definitely store bought...wait, what are we talking about?

Just for giggles:  fake but irrelevant.  If he can convince them he's real (whether he is or not) that's all that counts.  Truth is what you can convince people to believe.

It doesn't matter.

In-world, there will be as many opinions as on this forum and no way to prove it, so it all rests on claims by Varys and co. Hence it depends on how many people (and who they are) believe (in) him. From a literary standpoint, the readers obviously (see list above) want to know. GRRM can tell us (his thoughts on the matter) if he wants to. But he can just as much leave it open forever. In both options it would be some kind of inversion of a trope anyways, if he's fake there's the various turn-arounds pointed out above, if he's not, the book undercuts the expectations of the majority of its readership (I do get the impression that more readers believe he's fake than real).

So, why does it matter?
